Culture Shock! Germany > Customer Review #1: Great resource for understanding Germans and Germany

For anyone planning on living, studying, or working in Germany for any duration of time my advice to you is: "Dont leave home without this book." Important to keep in mind that Lord writes the book from the perspective of an American citizen who is married to a German, has lived in Germany for over 15 years, and has exchanged opinions with other foreign residents in Germany. In the introduction he discusses the parable of the blind men and the elephant and how this elephant is Germany with its "wildly contradictory ways." All in all, this is a very well written, organized, and balanced guide to Germany and modern German Life. (This review is of the revised 1999 edition)

Germany Germany wears its riches well: elegant big-city charm, small picture-postcard towns, pagan-inspired harvest festivals, a wealth of art and culture and the perennial pleasures of huge tracts of forest, delightful castles and fine wine and beer are all there for the savouring. Deep in the heart of Europe, Germany has had a seminal impact on Continental history. From Charlemagne and the Holy Roman Empire to Otto von Bismarck's German Reich, Nazism and the rise and fall of the Berlin Wall, no other nation has moulded Europe the way Germany has - for better or worse. Germany's reunification in 1990 was the beginning of yet another chapter in its complex history. The cultural, social and economic divide formed over 40 years of separation will take some time to bridge; nevertheless, the integration of the two Germanys is proceeding apace. Welcome here! This site unveils the versatility of German Culture . The concept of culture includes many aspects like language and literature , art galleries and museums, or music and education . This is but a very brief list of all possible categories defining culture of a certain country, community, or population. Switch on Deutschland – complexity and exactness are reflected in its name as well as in its sound like in the mirror. This country gave birth to such celebrities as Richard Wagner, Claudia Schiffer, Erich Maria Remarque, Albert Einstein , Sigmund Freud, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and many-many more.
What kind of people are Aryans? Belligerent and arrogant, or kind and friendly? Do Germans usually walk around in Lederhosen drinking beer ? Is the life of German women really tied to the famous four K’s: Kirche, Kueche, Kinder, Kleider? Answers to these and lots of other questions you will find here. It often happens that the Germans and their Austrian and Swiss neighbors are the victims of cultural stereotyping and misconceptions. The horrible historic events during the reign of the Third Reich and the aftermath of the Second World War continue to color people's perceptions of a culture that has given the world not only Goethe, Mozart, and Einstein, but also Bismarck, Hitler, and Honecker. This site will attempt to offer a balanced look at one of the world's most significant cultures. This site will be a profile of the daily life and culture of the German people.
