Culture
Unsurprisingly for a country whose land has so often been at history's crux, the moods and preoccupations of Germany's people are reflected in a rich artistic heritage: from the claustrophobic beauty of its cathedrals to classical films from the silent era of cinema, from the most influential philosophers (try Kant, Hegel, Nietzsche and Marx for starters) to some of the world's great physicists (Einstein and Planck), from the cream of classical composers (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Handel and Wagner) to contemporary industrial-grunge music and Krautrock, from the genius of Goethe to the revolutionary theatre of Brecht, Germany has it all. The scope of German art is such that it could be the focus of an entire visit. Arguably the finest artist Germany has produced, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832) was a poet, dramatist, painter, scientist and philosopher. His greatest work, the drama Faust , is a masterful epic of all that went before him, as the archetypal human strives for meaning. The ghost of Goethe inhabits the soul of Germany. A steadfast commitment to excellence in artistry persists in more recent forms, with Germany a notable producer of excellent and challenging cinema from Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog, among others. Gl¼hwein , a hot, spicy mulled wine guaranteed to take the chill away.

Germany History
The worldwide Depression in the 1930s caused extremely high inflation and political instability in the Weimar Republic. Those conditions were exploited by the Nazi party, under Adolph Hilter, which came to power in 1933, the beginning of the Third Reich. Germany invaded Poland in 1939, which started World War II. When Germany was defeated, it was split again, with the eastern sector under the control of the Soviet Union and the three western sectors under the control of France, Britain and the U.S. During the Cold War, East Germany enjoyed the highest standard of living among Warsaw Pact countries, though that prosperity was relative: West Germany forged ahead with the "economic miracle" spurred on by the Marshall Plan. The Berlin Wall fell in November 1989, and less than a year later, the two Germanys were reunited. Today, united Germany is the economic powerhouse of Europe. Culture
As a result of the country’s federal structure, culture in Germany is a basic strand of the independent status of individual states; the Basic Law accords the federal government only severely limited powers. The fact that individual states are responsible for their own cultural affairs has led to the emergence of large and small cultural centers of differing standing. Germany has never had a clear cultural capital. Diverse cultural scenes have sprung up even in small towns and districts. The fact that various cultural institutions and activities in Germany are spread throughout the regions bears witness to this variety. Deutsche Bibliothek, a federal institution, has branches in Frankfurt/Main, Leipzig and Berlin. The Federal Records Office, headquartered in Koblenz, has offices in Berlin, Potsdam, Freiburg and Bayreuth, among others. Hamburg is the city with the greatest concentration of media companies. Cologne, Düsseldorf and Kassel are three of the centers for the Modern fine arts. Berlin has the most theaters. The most important museums are in Berlin, Dresden, Hildesheim, Frankfurt/Main, Cologne, Munich, Nuremberg and Stuttgart. The two most important literature archives are located in Marbach and Weimar. Most cultural establishments in the Federal Republic are maintained by the states, cities and local authorities. With a few exceptions, legislation pertaining to cultural affairs is the responsibility of individual states.

Published by EH.NET (December 2002) Bernd Widdig, Culture and Inflation in Weimar Germany . Berkeley: University of California Press, 2001. xvi + 277 pp. $45 (hardback), ISBN: 0-520-22290-3. Reviewed for EH.NET by Hans-Joachim Voth, Department of Economics, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Barcelona. Weimar was Germany's belated and ultimately ill-fated attempt at becoming a democracy fourteen brief years between the Empire's ignominious end and Hitler's rise to power. Of these, nine were dominated by major economic upheavals. Germany engineered one of the most breathtaking inflations in recorded history between 1919 and 1923. After 1929, the dramatic collapse of the economy, leading to six million unemployed at the trough of the Depression, probably undermined the Republic fatally. On the other hand, Weimar is widely remembered as a hotbed of cultural modernity the films of Fritz Lang, Oscar Schlemmer's Triadic Ballet, Bauhaus architecture, Max Reinhardt's and Bert Brecht's theatre and the breakthrough of expressionism as an art form, to name but a few examples, all flourished amidst the putsches and revolts, at a time of foreign invasion, currency depreciation and spiraling prices when governments changed with Italian frequency. This reader found the author's reading of key figures, such as Dr. Mabuse in Fritz Lang's classic film, valuable. For Widdig, people partly reacted to the inflation's trauma by looking for emblematic characters that could help them with making sense of the increasingly destructive maelstrom. Gerald D. Feldman, in his definitive history of the German inflation, called 1922 the 'Year of Dr. Mabuse.' The film depicts the evil machinations of a criminal with superhuman powers of psychological manipulation, who engineers wild gyrations on the stock market, forges bank notes, cheats at cards, and ruins the lives of various attractive German

Tom Weiner There were many territories that made up the Roman Empire. These territories that made up the Empire helped to make the Roman Empire one of the greatest civilizations of its time and probably of the greatest of all time. One of these territories was Germania which later developed into the present day country of Germany. The German agricultural system was vital to the economy in Germany. Most of the Germans were farmers but a large portion of the population was herders. The Germans were agriculturists from the beginning of their existence. They established agricultural villages based on land plots that were grouped around a central water supply. The main crops that they raised were cereal grains such as wheat, barley, oats, and rye. Around the North Sea area there was an emphasis on cattle raising. They raised their herds in the mountainous districts in the surrounding areas. Germany also had a great strategic advantage that was appealing to the Romans. First of all it could be used to protect Gaul north of the Danube which had already come under Rome influence. Germany also provided for a buffer from Gaul. There was no real boundary in the east so the acquisition of Germany gave the Romans the protected border that they needed. The tribes that eventually settled in the Germanic area were tribes that had for the most part been migrating throughout Europe for many years. There were some tribes that claimed to have Germanic ties, such as the Treveri and the Sugambri and some others but for the most part the tribes that made up Germany migrated from Gaul or other surrounding areas. The physical features of each tribe were very similar to each other. Tacitus described the Germans as blond-haired, blue-eyed people with large frames. Other accounts tell of reddish-blond-haired figures that were well-built and long-skulled. Their facial features are preserved on Roman monuments.
