Their Contributions to the Upper Midwest
Mary Alice Anderson and Kim Penrod
Why did Germans immigrate to the Upper Midwest in the late-nineteenth and early-twentieth century? What contributions did they make to the region's cultural heritage? Students use American Memory photographs and documents to answer these questions and others while strengthening their German language skills. Content Objectives: Students will: gain an understanding of how contemporary lifestyles/cultures/traditions are influenced by the contributions of the settlers of that region; and use their prior knowledge of German to discuss photographs of people.
Information Literacy Objectives: Students will: become familiar with the American Memory collections. learn, develop and apply varying search processes and strategies to access resources in American Memory (IP standard 1, indicator 5). formulate questions based on informational needs (IP standard 1, indicator 3).

Learning vocabulary with plants Treasure hunt (with the ingredients for a German berry pudding H”nde waschen Hand washing Freezeball spielen Outdoor games using German vocabulary while pudding is cooling "Wir haben Hunger" ñ Lied "We're hungry" Song Rote Gr¸tze essen Enjoy berry pudding while a story is read Das Buch "Der Hase und die Farben" Reading aloud a picture book in German involving a rabbit and colors Mit Farben spielen Color mixing demonstration "Auf Wiedersehen" Lied "Goodbye" Song Each Saturday language class is taught using as much of the target language as possible. By employing this immersion strategy the children train their ear to the new language. Although immersion may seem frightening on paper, the actual class is very entertaining. The Instructors use Total Physical Response (TPR), gestures, realia, pictures and photos, in order to portray the ideas conveyed in the target language. The children immediately understand and want to participate. The curriculum also involves repetition, music and singing, movement, games, art, foods and crafts to teach grammar and vocabulary, as well as culture.
