Can Fuel Cells Challenge Combustion Engines? by Sisi Chen, age 16 The traditional internal combustion engine commonly used in automobiles is fundamentally flawed. Even after a century of improvements, the efficiency of the internal combustion, or heat engine, is still limited by the Carnot Cycle. This cycle dictates that, even when conditions are ideal, a heat engine is unable to convert all of the thermal energy supplied to it into mechanical energy. An emerging alternative energy source is fuel cells. Fuel cells are better at transforming thermal energy into mechanical energy and therefore, more efficient and less polluting than the internal combustion engine. In fact, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are twice as efficient as internal combustion engines and produce only heat and water as waste. The water emitted is clean enough to drink. A fuel cell is a device that converts hydrogen and oxygen into water. Through this conversion, energy, in the form of heat and electricity, is produced. Fuel cells also have the ability to be recharged while power is being drawn from it, behaving very much like a battery. Unlike batteries however, fuel cells recharge using hydrogen and oxygen instead of electricity. Beneficial as they are, fuel cells are not an energy saving panacea. Although the oxygen required for fuel cells is easily attainable through the air, the hydrogen is not so readily available. Hydrogen does not exist in its pure form on earth, and therefore must be made.

It is estimated that approximately 10 percent of the world's geothermal energy exists in Japan. However, the total capacity of installed geothermal plants in Japan are only 530 MW. The geothermal energy, which is domestic energy in a real meaning, is not only clean and inexpensive, but also is expected to be beneficial to the local society through multipurpose utilization. Furthermore, the geothermal energy is regarded as the most promising oil-alternative energy.

Carbon or hydrocarbon fuels, derived from what was living material, and found underground or beneath the sea. The most common forms are coal, oil and natural gas. They take millions of years to form. Their energy is only released upon burning, when the carbon and hydrogen within them combine with the oxygen in air to form carbon dioxide (CO ), or carbon monoxide (CO) and water (H O). Other elements within the fuels (such as sulfur or nitrogen) are also released into the air after combining with oxygen, causing further pollution with SO and nitrogen oxide gases. In the case of coal, ash particles are also a problem.

Unocal also has proven experience in planning, designing, building and operating private power projects. The company operates three of the world's major geothermal electricity projects: Tiwi and Mak-Ban in the Philippines and Gunung Salak in Indonesia. Together, these projects have a combined installed electrical generating capacity of 1,100 megawatts. In 2000, Unocal's daily geothermal energy production averaged 16 million kilowatt-hours, or the equivalent of 25,000 barrels of oil. Net proved geothermal reserves at year-end 2000 were the equivalent of 170 million barrels of oil. ALL ABOUT UNOCAL

Projects earlier taken up by MNES demonstrated the applications of geothermal fluids for small-scale power generation and in poultry farming and greenhouse cultivation. With support from MNES, the Geological Survey of India is working on a comprehensive report on the assessment of geothermal resource potential for direct heat application and power generation.

A DOE/industry partnership is behind the largest solar photovoltaic installation in the world. It will heat the water and provide electricity for the Natatorium, a swimming facility at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. The Bush administration is ignoring the most modern and sensible ways of supplying America's energy needs, says a coalition of energy businesses and industry trade associations. The Business Council for Sustainable Energy has expressed its disapproval of President George W. Bush's decision to cut $200 million from renewable energy and energy efficiency budget at the U.S. Department of Energy. The trade group, composed of businesses and trade associations committed to clean energy deployment, made its views known in its testimony on April 26 before the Energy Subcommittee of the House of Representatives Science Committee. "In the face of supply problems throughout the country, cuts in these programs just don't make sense," said Michael Marvin, the council's president. "What are the three technologies that can help the country most in the shortest period of time? The same ones that make sense in the long term: natural gas, renewable energy and energy efficiency. That's where the budget focus should be."

Research efforts and demonstration projects are bringing a set of vehicle technologies to market that are clean and highly efficient and that operate on alternative fuels. Air Surrey Natural Gas Vehicles Air Surrey Natural Gas Vehicles is an Ohio Corporation located in the Greater Toledo Metropolitan Area. Alternative Fuel Demonstrations - Demonstration Programs Introduce New Fuels Gasoline and diesel fuel have long been the primary transportation fuels in the United States. However, fleet owners across the country are beginning to experiment with other fuels to solve problems ranging from air pollution to tight budgets. As a result of these pilot demonstrations, many vehicles on the road today are powered by nonpetroleum fuel alternatives. A small portion of the 190 million cars, trucks, and buses in the United States run on alternative fuels all or most of the time. This includes about 300,000 vehicles equipped to run on propane (LPG); 30,000 on compressed natural gas (CNG); about 1,000 on methanol; a few hundred each on ethanol, electricity, and liquefied natural gas (LNG); and a handful on hydrogen. These vehicles are operated by fleet owners, private industry, federal, state, and local governments, transit agencies, and private citizens.
