HOW TO PLAN NATIONAL STD AWARENESS MONTH ACTIVITIES
APRIL 2004
UNIVERSITIES/COLLEGES/VOCATIONAL SCHOOLS
National STD Awareness Month is a national health observance sponsored by the American Social Health Association (ASHA) to help break the silence and to alert everyone to the growing crisis of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) in America. The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) encourages all Minnesotans to learn about STDs, one of the state’s most persistent health problems, during the observance of National STD Awareness Month. Public awareness and knowledge are critically low around the country and STDs remain at epidemic levels. Minnesota experienced a 19% increase in reportable STDs in 2002 compared to 2001.

DHR recognizes educational achievements of Georgia's foster kids
ATLANTA (GA) - Growing up in foster care isn’t easy, no matter how much assistance is provided by the folks at the Georgia Department of Human Resources Division of Family and Children Services (DFCS), foster families, or the community. Too often, our young people have, of necessity for their protection, been moved from placement to placement either from their own families to a foster care home or between foster homes. They’ve changed schools, sometimes several times in one year, and faced countless other challenges. And when it comes time for them to graduate, they don’t always have that group of family and friends cheering them on. The Celebration of Excellence does exactly that: a graduation event and scholarship program that recognizes the academic achievements of our foster kids who are graduating from high school, GED programs, vocational school, or college. This year’s event will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening, June 17, at Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre. Hosted by WXIA-TV’s Donna Lowry, the evening includes presentation of formal awards and scholarships, as well as a social gathering. These are our children and we want the entire community to join in the celebration! Governor and Mrs. Sonny Perdue will add their congratulations via video, and Lt. Gov. Mark Taylor will be on hand to deliver his best wishes.

GLRS Journal www.glrs.org WINTER 2002 Exceptional News From The Georgia Learning Resources System Since CIRCULATION Planning a High School Transition Plan By Liz Bryant, Clayton County Submitted by Lin Black, Metro West GLRS What do high school students with disabilities do when they grow up? How do we prepare students for work or training in the adult world after they leave high school, and what responsibilities do the students have to prepare for this transition? When the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) was passed, the law provided that a Transition Plan (TP) be developed for each student with disabilities by age 16 so that the student can prepare for employment and independent living. This Transition Plan is part of the student’s Individual Education Program (IEP), and it is reviewed annually. It is a guide that is designed to help the student, the family, the school system and involved support agencies plan for the future. As the student nears the end of high school, he/she is empowered to plan for the future based on the work ot the IEP team reflecting the student’s needs and preferences in the Transition Plan.

Mother's Day: Middle Georgia sons, daughters share their mom's best advice
By Liz Fabian
Telegraph Staff Writer

When Bert Bivins was pushing a broom at Robins Air Force Base, his mother wanted much more for him. Hester Bivins was making a living cleaning other people's houses while encouraging her son and six other children to reach beyond the limitations of segregated society in the '60s. With his mother's support, Bert Bivins had the courage to defy a system determined to keep him from reaching his dream of working with electronics. He achieved his goal and much more. Bivins, 62, now represents District 2 on the Bibb County Commission. Many people have a bit of unforgettable advice from their mother. Bivins remembers his mother's three-fold advice to her kids: "Follow the rules, accept authority and learn all you can."
