  • Natives and near-natives : please take responsibility both as judges and as teachers. Do not sign up kids for competitions inappropriate for their level of German. This continues to happen each year and is such a disappointment, especially to all hard-working students. I realize we are getting more international students each year with more experience with German than our programs can offer. Sometimes schools will put these kids in our German 2 or 3 classes, when they in fact should be in at least 4 or 5. Please be wise, and even if they are in your 2 or 3 class, put them in the correct competitions, or put them in interest sessions at the convention. As a judge, when you get one of these students in the wrong level, be kind, but let them know that they cannot receive a prize. It would be most unfair; remember, you the judge are not at fault, the teacher is! It is not necessary to sign your students up for interest sessions or for Plaudern ahead of time, but you should check the

A conversation with former Deputy U.S. Attorney General
    Larry D. Thompson, '74
In the following interview, former Deputy U.S. Attorney General Larry D. Thompson, '74, who recently became a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and Visiting Professor of Law at the University of Georgia Law School for the 2004 spring semester, reflects on his Law School association and discusses some of the ideas that have propelled his career. Thompson's 30-year career has been marked by successes in both the private and public spheres. He was a longtime partner with King and Spalding in Atlanta, where he earned high regard as a specialist in the fields of criminal law and corporate crime. In the public sector, he has served as U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia, Director of the Southeastern Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force, Independent Counsel for the Department of Housing and Urban Development Investigation, and Chairman of the Judicial Review Commission on Foreign Asset Control.
Q: Do you recall your thoughts when you arrived here in 1971? And today, what kinds of high and low points do you recall from your three years here? Do any of your Law School experiences, teachers, or fellow students especially stand out in your memory?

A Georgia school district has decreed that evolution is just a theory and should not therefore be given priority in the schools. The ruling came down after 2000 county residents signed a petition demanding that stickers stating that evolution is theory and not a fact be placed on the covers of all biology books. Here is the Cobb County School District's policy on Theories of Origin:
As stated in Policy IA, Philosophy, it is the educational philosophy of the Cobb County School District to provide a broad based curriculum; therefore, the Cobb County School District believes that discussion of disputed views of academic subjects is a necessary element of providing a balanced education, including the study of the origin of the species. This subject remains an area of intense interest, research, and discussion among scholars. As a result, the study of this subject shall be handled in accordance with this policy and with objectivity and good judgment on the part of teachers, taking into account the age and maturity level of their students. The purpose of this policy is to foster critical thinking among students, to allow academic freedom consistent with legal requirements, to promote tolerance and acceptance of diversity of opinion, and to ensure a posture of neutrality toward religion. It is the intent of the Cobb County Board of Education that this policy not be interpreted to restrict the teaching of evolution; to promote or require the teaching of creationism; or to discriminate for or against a particular set of religious beliefs, religion in general, or non-religion.
