Exceptional Children in Georgia Schools Assisted by New Technology
By NBR Oct 23, 2003, 10:49 Email this article Printer friendly page KNOXVILLE, TN Twenty-four Georgia School Districts will be implementing a web-based system to manage Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for children identified as exceptional. These select districts will use IMSeriesIEP to ensure they meet accountability requirements as contained within federally mandated legislation (I.D.E.A.). "We're excited," says Phyllis Hart, Special Education Director for the Walker County School District. "IMSeriesIEP will help us ensure special education students receive the best possible instruction while meeting state and federal guidelines." These guidelines are mandated by the recent No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. This new software is customized to Georgia standards and focuses on the needs of the student while ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements. IMSeriesIEP also provides educators with the ability to tie instructional information for exceptional children directly to the general education program. This unique capability enables exceptional children's instructional programs to consider and incorporate the curriculum to which all other students have access.

Georgia School Board OKs Alternatives to Evolution
ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) A suburban Atlanta school board Thursday night voted unanimously to allow teachers to introduce students to different views about the origins of life. The Cobb County Board of Education, the state's second-largest school board, approved the policy change after limited discussion, calling it a "necessary element of providing a balanced education." The board's vote drew cheers from some and expressions of dismay from others in the packed meeting room. "This supposed victory [by proponents of alternate theories] was shallow, very shallow," said Jeffrey Selman. Selman and other opponents believe the new policy is a step toward introducing religion in particular, creationism in public schools. "We're going to be watching this very closely." The adopted policy, however, included language intended to clarify the board's position that its action is not an endorsement of one particular theory over another. "It is the intent of the Cobb County Board of Education that this policy not be interpreted to restrict the teaching of evolution; to promote or require the teaching of creationism; or to discriminate for or against a particular set of religious beliefs, religion in general or non-religion," a portion of the policy said.

In 1784 the General Assembly had set aside 40,000 acres of land to endow a college or seminary of learning. At the first meeting of the board of trustees, held in Augusta on February 13, 1786, Abraham Baldwin was selected president of the University. Baldwin, a native of Connecticut and a graduate of Yale University who had come to Georgia in 1784, drafted the charter adopted by the General Assembly. The University was actually established in 1801 when a committee of the board of trustees selected a land site. John Milledge, later a governor of the state, purchased and gave to the board of trustees the chosen tract of 633 acres on the banks of the Oconee River in northeast Georgia.
