Nutrition A nutritionist may go into college teaching and/or research, become associated with the food industry in basic or applied research, become more involved in dietetics leading to jobs in food service management or clinical nutrition, or go into public health nutrition. As a public health nutritionist one could provide leadership to legislators, administrators, health planners, and health officials on issues affecting the nutritional status of the population, participate in the planning of health services, the establishment of standards and the evaluation of nutritional services. One could become involved as an advocate for nutrition programs for low-income women and children or for the growing population of elderly people. The development and coordination of Food Banks is another possible job opportunity. Nutritionists may be hired by agencies such as the American Heart Association and the Diabetic Association. Some Nutritionists have opened their own practices acting as consultants in nutrition education programs for corporations that recognize the advantage of having healthy employees. They provide nutrition education through consumer groups and the media. The activities are limited only by the energy and creativity of the nutritionists. These 14 essential minerals are crucial to the growth and production of bones, teeth, hair, blood, nerves, skin, vitamins, enzymes and hormones; and the healthy functioning of nerve transmission, blood circulation, fluid regulation, cellular integrity, energy production and muscle contraction.* We get these essential minerals primarily through the foods we eat. Good sources of essential minerals include fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, beans and dairy products. Unfortunately, much of the soil in which food is grown has been depleted of these nutritive minerals, therefore the mineral content in food is reduced.3,4 We also obtain some minerals from the water we drink, but the amounts vary widely.

Performing artists, including actors, athletes, dancers and non-dancers should become knowledgeable of various body awareness techniques that can addresses their individual movement needs. Generally, these techniques comprise stretching, improvisational dance methods, and relaxation. These techniques, once acquired, could help to develop a new comfort level with the body, a greater sense of space and increased ease of motion. More specific examples of such techniques includes the following: Ch'i kung exercise for health . Ch'i kung is a mental and physical training method that promotes the circulation of ch'i (a form of bioenergy) in the body. Ch'i kung is said to help prevent and treat illness, increase strength, release stress, reduce body fat, improve work efficiency, resist premature senility, and achieve harmony of body, mind and spirit. NEW CHALLENGES IN THE AREA OF CLINICAL NUTRITION
Gail Cresci, MS, RD, CNSD, LD Director Surgical Nutrition Medical College of Georgia Augusta, Georgia USA The science of nutrition, with its evolution over the past several decades, has become a very exciting field to both nutritionists and the lay public. It has grown from the treatment of single nutrient deficiencies and the treatment of disease with therapeutic diets, to covering all aspects of growth and development as well as maintaining health and well being. Current research now reveals that good nutrition can prevent many disease states. Also with the accumulating problems with antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, there is a bigger interest in modulating the immune system through nutrients to fight off infections. Medical food is defined slightly different from functional food. In contrast with functional foods, supplements are an accepted form of medical food. Supplements of concentrated ingredients such as antioxidants, vitamins, minerals, amino acids, nucelotides, special fatty acids such as n-3 fatty acids, fibers, and bacteria are important for function of medical foods.
