Smith File: Georgia DT poised to reap rewards
By Andy Fenelon
Packer Plus writer April 30, 1997 Green Bay Jermaine Smith is offering you the details of his life and you don't know whether to probe further or stop and give him a hug as big as his 6-3, 289-pound frame. The details soon become a life full of heartache undeserving of any human soul. But make no mistake, Jermaine Smith's story is an uplifting one. His road has been long, arduous, painful and certainly less traveled. But the rewards the Green Bay Packer fourth-round draft selection is beginning to reap now, both professionally and spiritually, have brought a sense of peace to his life. Jermaine Smith at a glance Selection : 126th overall (fourth round). School : Georgia. Major Size Age Position : Defensive tackle. 40-yard dash Hometown : Augusta, Ga. Quote : Robert Nunn, Smith's former coach at Georgia Military College I've coached four (NFL) first-rounders (Bobby Wilson, Chris Mims, Todd Kelly and Chuck Smith) and they've been four great players. But they don't have anything on that kid (Smith). The strongest part about Jermaine is his first step. He's just so quick, explosive. I thought he would go in the second or third round. I think (the Packers) got a steal." Notes : Two-year starter as a defensive end at Georgia Military Junior College before transferring to Georgia in '95. . . . Started 15 of 22 games at nose tackle in the Bulldogs' 3-4 defense. . . . Was a defensive lineman and fullback at Laney High School in Augusta. . . . Had touchdown runs of 85 and 79 yards as a Laney senior. . . . Never graduated from high school, but received his GED. . . . Rated the fifth-best defensive tackle prospect by draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr., but was the eighth selected. . . . Had the third-lowest score (10) on the 50-question Wonderlic intelligence test of all the defensive linemen at the combine in February.

General Information
The purpose of the Army ROTC is to prepare students for commissioning as officers in the Active Army, Army Reserve, or Army National Guard. The overall program is designed to aid students in developing the abilities and attitudes that will make them academically successful and to develop well educated junior officers. The curriculum is divided into two courses: a Basic Course open to all freshmen and sophomores, and an Advanced Course for qualified juniors, seniors, and graduate students. The student who is undecided about pursuing a commission has the option of participating in the Basic Course without incurring a military obligation. Successful completion of the Basic Course (or commensurate training), a minimum 2.0 cumulative grade point average, and the appropriate medical and physical qualifications are prerequisites for enrollment in the Advanced Course. Successful completion of both courses and the award of a bachelor's degree constitute the normal progression to gaining a commission as a second lieutenant. Courses are available to both men and women.

Georgia Mason When my family left Fort Bliss, having completed 5th grade, I believe in Mrs. Spears' class, we went to zweibrucken Germany and I completed the 6th, and 7th grades. I have many fond memories of these times as well, and did not want to move back stateside and leave all my friends. I think,up until this move, I did not think much about moving, because we all did it, and it was a part of our lives. It became more difficult the older I got, but I always found a niche to be a part of no matter where I was. And could always get along with everyone, no matter our differences. I think this is one of the plusses of moving frequently and being with others who did the same. We returned stateside, living at Fort Harrison, Indiana. I began the 8th grade there and stayed in the same school system (albeit civilian) through my junior year in high school (Lawrence Central High School). We lived on post and the majority of my friends were Army Brats like myself. In fact Lawrence Central was filled with many Army Brats! We stayed in Indianapolis for this length of time because my father also served a tour of duty in Korea. He returned home the summer before my senior year and was then stationed at Fort Monroe, Virginia. This was a tough move for me; being shy and quiet made it difficult. But graduate I did (Chris Moore was in my graduating class at Kecoughtan HS) and moved on to college. I now enjoy playing tennis 4 times a week, work out 2x a week, enjoy reading , needlework and playing on the computer! There is a slight itch to get back into my field and do what I believe I am gifted in doing, but have not done that so far........Time will tell. In the meantime, this has been fun, finding us on the Net and talking to Marc. And I know all you guys have been dying to find Cindy Glover, and I promise you, if I find her first, I'LL TELL YOU HOW TO GET IN TOUCH WITH HER!!! Unless she is still cute and perky!!! ha ha She was a good friend then, and it would be fun.to see and or hear from her......Oh I forgot to tell you that in my 20's I was one of the swimsuit models in Sports Illustrated.........Just kidding.

Biography
Charles Whitlow Norwood, Jr.
Charlie Norwood is beginning his fifth term in Congress, currently representing Georgia’s Ninth Congressional District. He is Chairman of the Subcommittee on Workforce Protections of the Education and Workforce Committee, and Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee on Health of the Energy and Commerce Committee. He is also the former Chairman of the G-8 Organization, comprised of the eight Georgia Republican members of Congress. Since coming to Congress in January of 1995, Charlie has acquired national recognition as a leader in the effort to reform America’s ailing managed care industry. He introduced the first fully comprehensive legislation to restore patient’s rights in September 1995 and that first bill has remained the foundation of the patient’s rights movement in every successive legislative effort. Charlie’s on-going campaign led to House passage of the Norwood-Dingell Consensus Managed Care Improvement Act, HR 2723 in October of 1999, then the Bipartisan Patient Protection Act, HR 2563, in August of 2001. Charlie continues to work with both parties in Congress and the White House for final action in the U.S. Senate. Charlie’s efforts to reform American health care have also extended to America’s military retirees and veterans. He was co-author of the Keep Our Promises to Military Retirees Act of 1999, HR 3573. The legislation would restore the promise of fully-funded health care for life for the nation’s military retirees – benefits which have been severely eroded by eight years of defense cuts. While the legislation itself was not acted on during the 106

Exceptional Children in Georgia Schools Assisted by New Technology
By NBR Oct 23, 2003, 10:49 Email this article Printer friendly page KNOXVILLE, TN Twenty-four Georgia School Districts will be implementing a web-based system to manage Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for children identified as exceptional. These select districts will use IMSeriesIEP to ensure they meet accountability requirements as contained within federally mandated legislation (I.D.E.A.). "We're excited," says Phyllis Hart, Special Education Director for the Walker County School District. "IMSeriesIEP will help us ensure special education students receive the best possible instruction while meeting state and federal guidelines." These guidelines are mandated by the recent No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law. This new software is customized to Georgia standards and focuses on the needs of the student while ensuring compliance with state and federal requirements. IMSeriesIEP also provides educators with the ability to tie instructional information for exceptional children directly to the general education program. This unique capability enables exceptional children's instructional programs to consider and incorporate the curriculum to which all other students have access.

Education and Transportation Key to Protecting Georgia Bases Print-friendly version By Johnny Isakson
Georgia's 13 military bases are central to our nation's defense and-from Savannah to Marietta-an integral part of our state's community fabric. But with a combined economic impact of over $25 billion each year, and tens of thousands of military and civilian jobs, Georgia's military installations - such as Dobbins Air Reserve Base - are also critical to our economy. This year, Georgia's Congressional Delegation will be working together to protect our military bases and keep good, high-paying jobs in our state.
The Pentagon is set to begin the next phase of base closures and realignments, which is expected to end in the closing of as many as one in four military bases in the U.S. It is a certainty that several bases in our state will come under close scrutiny.
Governor Sonny Perdue has gotten our state off to a solid start by working closely with base commanders and leaders in Washington to learn how to make the best possible case for keeping Georgia bases open. Not surprisingly, two of the most important concerns cited are improving the education and transportation assets that support our bases and the personnel who staff them. These issues are near to my heart because I serve on the two committees responsible for them in Congress.
In terms of making an immediate impact on military families, no issue is more important than education. First and foremost, we must continue to focus on increasing student achievement in our state. In addition, the Defense Department is increasingly shifting education responsibilities to the communities where bases are located, and we must work to more quickly integrate military students into local schools. This process must include everything from ensuring prior credits from other areas are appropriately transferred to getting military kids immediately involved in extracurricular activities that interest them. The best way to do this is to give every school and local school board the flexibility and accountability to ensure Georgia's students, including those of military families, have every opportunity to succeed in the classroom.
