Georgia Military College to open campus in Columbus
Associated Press COLUMBUS, Ga. Georgia Military College is opening another campus, bringing Columbus its first two-year community college. The campus is expected to open for classes June 21 in a 12,000-square-foot building currently undergoing renovation, said Christi Dixon, director of the Columbus campus and one nearby at Fort Benning. Once fully operational, the campus will be able to accommodate about 1,000 students, with classes open to anyone with a high school diploma or GED. The Columbus school will offer two-year associate degrees in general studies, science and the arts, and degrees specializing in early education, criminal justice and business. It will also work toward a pre-nursing program.

GMC bars media from speech by Lynch rescue pilot
By Rob Peecher
Telegraph Staff Writer
MILLEDGEVILLE
Officials at Georgia Military College turned away reporters and photographers who were invited to hear a speech Wednesday by a helicopter pilot involved in the rescue of Jessica Lynch. Col. Jim LeBrun, the principal of GMC's high school, and Janeen Smith, the public relations director for the school, stopped members of the media outside the auditorium with "bad news." LeBrun said Marine Maj. Craig Kopel told them before giving the speech that he would not speak if any members of the media were present. They said he did not want his name or photograph printed, though his name was in a news release announcing his appearance. Kopel was scheduled to speak to junior and high school students. LeBrun said Kopel would "get in trouble" if he spoke to or in front of the media.

Georgia Military Scholarship
North Georgia is the only four-year university in the state with an all-inclusive scholarship that pays for virtually every educational expense. The Georgia Military Scholarship is offered through NGCSU and is awarded annually to 39 incoming military freshmen. There are also several one-, two- and three-year re-award GMS scholarships available. Financing college through GMS allows students to focus on school. Every cost incurred, including dorm room fees, tuition, books, meal plan and uniform allowance, is covered by GMS for four years. Students who receive the scholarship commit to serve in the Georgia Army National Guard while going to school and commission as officers in the Guard upon graduation. The Georgia Army National Guard allows people who want to serve their country the opportunity to do so without committing to a full-time military job. Guard members train with their units around the state one weekend a month and do a two-week training assembly every year.

GENERAL PROGRAM (GMC and POC) Air Force ROTC field training is offered during the summer months at selected Air Force bases throughout the United States. Students in the four-year program participate in four weeks of field training, usually between their sophomore and junior years. Students applying for entry into the two-year program must successfully complete six weeks of field training prior to enrollment in the Professional Officer Course. The major areas of study in the four-week field training program include junior officer training, aircraft orientation, career orientation, survival training, base functions and Air Force environment, and physical training. The major areas of study included in the six-week field training program are essentially the same as those conducted at four-week field training and in the General Military Course including Leadership Laboratory.

Sharon Shea-Keneally, principal of Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, Vermont, was shocked when she received a letter in May from military recruiters demanding a list of all her students, including names, addresses, and phone numbers. The school invites recruiters to participate in career days and job fairs, but like most school districts, it keeps student information strictly confidential. "We don't give out a list of names of our kids to anybody," says Shea-Keneally, "not to colleges, churches, employers nobody." But when Shea-Keneally insisted on an explanation, she was in for an even bigger surprise: The recruiters cited the No Child Left Behind Act, President Bush's sweeping new education law passed earlier this year. There, buried deep within the law's 670 pages, is a provision requiring public secondary schools to provide military recruiters not only with access to facilities, but also with contact information for every student or face a cutoff of all federal aid.
