A beloved tradition
Buckhead's first library was located in R.L. Hope School on Piedmont Road, just behind what is now the Grand Hyatt Buckhead hotel. It was founded in 1929 by Ida Williams , a former principal at R.L. Hope. As the library grew, it moved to the McDuffie building on Roswell Road across from what is now Buckhead Triangle Park and was officially named the Ida Williams Library . After Willaims' death in 1936, funds were raised for a permanent building at 49 Buckhead Ave. , and a neo-classical red-brick building with a white-columned portico designed by Cooper and Cooper was opened in 1942. In 1990, this community landmark was replaced with the current ultra-modern building designed by architect Mark Scogin , sparking both criticism and praise. Along with the traditional building, the Ida Williams name also was lost, but not to long-time residents. The Atlanta Fulton Public Library has two branches in Buckhead: Buckhead (Ida Williams) Branch

CONGRESS TO RECOGNIZE SW GEORGIA LIBRARY SYSTEM The Southwest Georgia Regional Library System, one of this year's four recipients of the nation's highest honor for community service by libraries and museums, will be recognized in Congress after the 2002 Congressional session resumes on November 12, according to U.S. Representative Sanford Bishop. "All of us who live in this area of the state can be extremely proud of the Southwest Georgia Regional Library System, which is reaching out in innovative and exciting ways to help people of all ages, from throughout the widespread rural area it serves, to learn and grow," the Second District Congressman said. "This is an inspiring story that should be shared with everyone in Congress and throughout the whole country." When Congress returns from its current recess, he said he would rise on the floor of the House and Representatives to recognize the system for the exemplary service it has provided to disadvantaged children and adults and to the entire population of 44,000 it serves in Decatur, Miller and Seminole counties. The Southwest Georgia Regional Library System is one of the four 2002 recipients of the National Awards for Museum and Library Service sponsored by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, an independent federal grant-making agency that promotes innovative learning initiatives. The awards, considered the top community service awards for the country's 15,000 museums and 122,000 libraries, were presented at a White House ceremony on October 29, at 9:00 a.m. First Lady Laura Bush made the presentations.
