Significant dates in Georgia library history Compiled through Sept. 1, 2002 The colony of Georgia was founded, and soon after, more than 2,000 books were donated for its first library.
A three-room school was established in Irene, Ga., including a library stocked with several hundred books printed in England and Germany.
Trustees in London sent to Augusta 166 volumes for a missionary library.
The Georgia Library Association was established. It had no connection to he 1897 association of the same name.
George Whitefield's Bethesda, an orphanage and college established in Savannah in 1740, organized a 30-foot-by-40-foot room as a library, with approximately 1,300 volumes.
The Medway and Newport Library Society of Liberty County was incorporated.
The University of Georgia's board of trustees established a library collection to be purchased with $1,000.

General Information about the Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped
Through the Georgia Library for Accessible Services, Georgia's Library for the Blind and Physically Handicapped and cooperating local libraries, Georgians have access to a free national library program that offers Braille and recorded materials. The materials are provided by the , to eligible visually and physically handicapped persons. All reading material and equipment is sent to borrowers and returned by postage-free mail. In addition to the headquarters library in Atlanta, there are 13 Subregional Talking Book Centers located throughout Georgia. To find the Subregional Talking Book Center nearest you, click here for a directory and map. Also, now library users can search the online catalog for Braille, recorded books, and descriptive videos, place requests and more!
Who Is Eligible for the service?
  • Anyone who is unable to read or handle standard printed materials as a result of temporary or permanent visual or physical disability. Persons who are legally blind or cannot see well enough or focus long enough to read standard print, even with glasses.
