Italy Information Geography
Italy occupies a Peninsula running southeast into the Mediterranean from the mainland of Europe. Its land borders in the North are with France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia. To the East, Italy faces former Yugoslavia across the Adriatic Sea. To the west is the Tyrrhenian Sea. Italy has many islands: the largest of them is Sicily. Sardinia, Elba and Capri are also important. Italy also includes two separate principalities: Vatican City in Rome and San Marino. Rome is the capital city and among other important cities are Florence, Genoa, Milan, Naples, Turin and Venice. In the North, Italy shares the Alps with France, Austria and Switzerland. A major mountain chain, the Apennines, runs down the centre of the country. Vesuvius, close to Naples, is the only active volcano on the European mainland; Etna on Sicily is one of the world's largest volcanoes. The largest river in Italy is the Po, which begins in the Alpine region in the west of the country and ends in an extensive delta on the Adriatic. The Tiber and the Arno are the other major rivers. Italy's climate is varied. In the north winters are cold and the summers hot. The Apennines also have cold, snowy winters. The south is warmer.

Area: 779,452 sq. km (300,950 square miles). Turkey has borders with Greece, Bulgaria, Armenia, Georgia, Iran, Iraq and Syria with easy land and sea access to the Gulf States, Levant and North Africa. It is the ninth largest country in the Middle East and the third largest in Europe. Turkey only consists of 23,000 sq. km in Europe: the remainder is in Asia. The Sea of Marmara and the Bosphorus and Dardanelles straits separate the European (Thrace) and Asian (Anatolian) parts of Turkey. Thrace is bordered by Greece (204 km) and Bulgaria (200 km) and by the Aegean and Black Seas. Anatolia is bordered by the Black Sea to the north, the Aegean to the west and Mediterranean to the south and Georgia (190 km), Armenia (200 km), Iran (470 km), Iraq (378 km) and Syria (789 km) in the east. Anatolia is a high plateau region, rising progressively towards the east and broken by the valleys of some 15 rivers, including the Tigris and the Euphrates. There are numerous lakes including Lake Van, which is really an inland sea. In the north the chain of the Ponitine Mountains runs parallel to the Black Sea; in the south, the Taurus Mountains almost touch the narrow, fertile coastal plain.

Location
:Azerbaijan occupies the southeastern part of the Caucasus, descending to the Caspian Sea, between Iran and the Russian Federation (Dagestan). The country is somewhere between Europe and Asia, as the Caucasus mountains are the conventional border between the two continents. So, the northeast half is in Europe and the southwest half is in Asia. Have this in mind, when looking for Azerbaijan, since you never know if it is classified under 'Europe' or under 'Asia'. (Azerbaijan is a member of the Council of Europe.) Azeris like to describe the country as 'shapped like an eagle', with its wings spread on the Caucasus and its head over the Caspian (its head being the Absheron peninsula). Try our sensitive map if you need inforation about Azeri cities and towns.

It is bordered by Florida (S), Alabama (W), Tennessee and North Carolina (N), and South Carolina and the Atlantic Ocean (E). Georgia is the largest state E of the Mississippi River and has three main topographical areas. Extending inland from the coast is a low coastal plain that covers the southern half of the state. In mountainous N Georgia are the Appalachian Plateau, the valley and ridge province, and the Blue Ridge province. Bridging these two sections and embracing about one third of the state is the Piedmont foothill region in central Georgia. A number of islands, part of the Sea Islands chain, lie off Georgia's coastline. The state is well drained by many rivers, including the Savannah, which forms the boundary with South Carolina; the Ocmulgee and the Oconee, which merge in the southeast to form the Altamaha; the Chattahoochee, which forms part of the Alabama boundary and joins with the Flint in the extreme southwest corner of the state to form the Apalachicola; and the Saint Marys, which rises in the large Okefenokee Swamp and forms part of the Georgia-Florida line. The most important cities are Atlanta, Columbus, Savannah, Macon, and Albany.
