Introduction Atlanta The coast Mountains ... Directory Georgia on my mind To coin a phrase from the title of a well-known song, if you have 'Georgia on your mind' you are most likely to associate it with America's classic Deep South, its antebellum mansions and plantations, Civil War history, music and Southern culture.
Georgia also lays claim to famous sons such as Martin Luther King Jr. and President Jimmy Carter, while Atlanta - the capital city - is the home of CNN and Coca-Cola, and was the inspiration behind the story Gone With The Wind.
But the entire Peach State, as Georgia is affectionately known, has everything and more that a visitor is looking for in a holiday to the US.
There is high-class shopping, dining, entertainment and the arts in the Atlanta Metro region; unspoilt beaches and water sports along the Atlantic Ocean, and classic touring in colonial Savannah and Georgia's Historic South.
Here you'll find more examples of Georgia's preservation at its best, in historic cities such as Macon, with its musical roots, and Augusta - the centre of the early cotton trade - now housing some of the state's most significant museums.
Add to this Georgia's beautiful mountains and rivers, which open up a whole range of outdoor pursuits and historic trails, and you begin to understand why the state is known as the 'Gateway to the South'.

Bridging these two sections and embracing about one third of the state is the Piedmont foothill region in central Georgia. A number of islands, part of the Sea Islands chain, lie off Georgia's coastline. The state is well drained by many rivers, including the Savannah, which forms the boundary with South Carolina; the Ocmulgee and the Oconee, which merge in the southeast to form the Altamaha; the Chattahoochee, which forms part of the Alabama boundary and joins with the Flint in the extreme southwest corner of the state to form the Apalachicola; and the Saint Marys, which rises in the large Okefenokee Swamp and forms part of the Georgia-Florida line. At the head of navigation on the Savannah River and protected by levees, Augusta is the trade center for a broad band of counties in Georgia and South Carolina known as the Central Savannah River Area. It is also an important industrial center, manufacturing textiles, chemicals, building materials, medical supplies, tools, and wood, paper, metal, and plastic products. The city is the headquarters of the Augusta National Golf Club and sponsors the annual Masters Tournament. Augusta grew from an old river trading post existing as early as 1717 and was named by James Oglethorpe in 1735 after the mother of George III. In the American Revolution, Augusta changed hands several times and was finally taken by Continental forces under Andrew Pickens and Light-Horse Harry Lee in 1781. It was the capital of Georgia from 1785 to 1795. Augusta expanded rapidly with the tobacco and cotton industries. By 1820 the city was a trade terminus; manufacturing began in 1828, when Augusta's first textile plant began operation. During the Civil War, Augusta housed the largest Confederate powderworks.

Cities may make their own weather
National Aeronautics and Space Administration scientists discovered the pattern in Atlanta, a sprawling metro area increasingly choked by traffic and smog. They were interested in Atlanta, in part, because it has few natural boundaries to contain the sprawl. ``The island is getting bigger, and it's causing changes in the climate all over the region,'' said C.P. Lo, a University of Georgia geography professor who worked on the NASA project. ``There are other cities developing similar trends, but Atlanta is the worst-case scenario.'' Major cities soak up heat all day in asphalt, concrete and buildings. In Atlanta, for example, the NASA team found that 95-degree days could cook rooftops to temperatures higher than 170 degrees. When the sun sets, the cities release what they've stored in a sweltering sigh, giving off heat in a column of low pressure. The low pressure sucks in cooler air, and the collision creates clouds and thunderstorms.
