Trip Summary
Trek Map Introduction
Georgia is the historic and geographic divide between Europe and Asia. Europe's highest mountain chain, the Caucasus, extend from the Black Sea to the Caspian Sea and separate Georgia from Russia. The main part of Georgia is located on the south side of the Greater Caucasus range resulting in a sunny and warm climate. The Georgian language and alphabet are unique and one of the oldest in the world. The origins of Georgian writing go back to the seventh century B.C. Echoes of Georgia's past ring out in Homer's hexameters, in the chronicles of Strabon's and Pompey's times.
Since the beginning of the fourth century, the religion in Georgia is Christian Orthodox , though in the mountains we can meet some traditions unchanged since BC. Before the Perestroika Georgia was one of the richest countries in the former USSR. It was the favourite place for all kinds of tourism. Now, after several years of upheaval it is once again gaining its stability and returning to hold its position as a tourist centre. The icy mountains of Caucasus and warm shores of Black Sea, hospitality and traditions, ancient Kolkhida and myths, art and folk songs - this is Georgia with its majestic past and present. When you travel in Georgia - you travel in back time!

Exploring the Region
One of the intriguing aspects of geography is the ever changing nature of the topics it covers. A good example of this would be the shifts we have seen in political climates around the globe which have, in some cases, resulted in dramatic changes in political boundaries. For someone looking at a map of the world in 1980, it would have been almost inconceivable to think that the largest nation on Earth, a gigantic superpower known as the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR), would, in just over ten years, cease to exist. This did not occur through nuclear annihilation, but rather as the result of a failed communist political system. What emerged was the rebirth of several independent countries, including Russia, the old core of the former USSR. Historical Background Early History - To understand the history of Russia and the former USSR, you must examine the early history of the Slavic peoples, defined linguistically as a distinctive branch of the Indo-European language family. The Slavs originated in or near the Pripyat marshes of modern Belarus. Around 2,000 years ago they began moving eastward, extending as far as modern Moscow by 200 A.D. By 900 A.D., Slavic power grew as they intermarried with southward-moving warriors from Sweden known as

Georgia Builds up Air Defence
Georgia is in the middle of talks with Ukraine and Czechia trying to get help building up further her air defence. According to Grigol Katamadze, Georgia's Ambassador to Ukraine, that country is expected to assist Georgia enhancing the existing and buying new technology and training her personnel.
According to the press service of the UN Association of Georgia, the authorities decided to build up air defence after the alleged bombings on August 23. This will force the government of Georgia to amend the republic's budget.
As President Eduard Shevarnadze said during a briefing on Monday, 'In case the violations continue, Georgia will have to do what any other country would do. Our hands are long enough for us not to remain helpless'.

Genre: Current Events, History Reviewed by Rochelle Caviness - December 3, 2003 Before the fall of the Soviet Union, studying geography was a tad easier. The USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics - Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik) covered an area about twice the size of the United States. It was filled with a diverse assemblage of people who belonged to a variety of different cultures, spoke a myriad of languages, and who practiced almost every relgion known on Earth. Despite this diversity, the USSR was viewed, and often studied, as a unified whole. This is no longer the case. With the collapse of the Soviet Union, many of the constituent republics that comprised the USSR have reemerged as independent countries. Therefore when studying the region students must contend with a legion of countries, where as previously they only had to, at least technically, study one. Students, and anyone interested in the countries of the former Soviet Union, will find Richard Seltzer's new CD
