http://www.atlantaregional.com/qualitygrowth/planning/housing.html
Housing ARC serves as the Regional Development Center (RDC), Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for the Atlanta region. These roles created a strong need to ensure that adequate housing planning occurs in the region. Housing is an essential need for all citizens of the region. Many families are able to find the type of housing and costs that meet their needs. Other families cannot afford to live in many areas of the region where jobs are located or have housing needs that are changing. Many housing agencies, local governments and the private sector are involved in various aspects of building and maintaining the housing stock of the Atlanta region. ARC, fulfilling its role as the RDC, must develop a Housing Element of the Regional Development Plan (RDP) to meet state minimum planning standards. In developing a Housing Element, ARC must understand existing housing activities; consider the needs for housing and support strategies to assist local governments and other organizations to provide housing for all citizens of the region. Housing needs change with the population growth of the region. Many senior citizens desire smaller housing sizes or need homes that meet their changing physical condition. As new families move to the region, they often must make a choice between the cost of housing and the length of a driving commute. Young families who have lived their lives in certain communities are not able to become homeowners in the area.

Congressman Lewis Offers Amendment In House Budget Committee to Restore Funding For HOPE VI Program Washington, DC - U.S. Congressman John Lewis (D-GA) offered an amendment in the House Budget Committee today to designated $574 million for the HOPE VI program in the 2003 federal budget. Funding for the HOPE VI program expired in 2002. President Bush's 2003 federal budget eliminates the program by providing NO funding to restore HOPE VI. HOPE VI is a federal housing program that aims to transform dilapidated, poverty-stricken public housing areas into quality mixed-income housing communities. The first HOPE VI community in the country, Centennial Place, is located in the City of Atlanta within the Fifth Congressional District represented by Congressman Lewis. Congressman Lewis, a member of the House Budget Committee, made the following statement in Committee: "Mr. Chairman, I want to offer an amendment that would restore The HOPE VI program. This amendment increases funding for the HOPE VI urban revitalization program by $574 million." "This amendment would also encourage Congress to reauthorize HOPE VI using a best practices approach, which involves examining the most successful methods used by housing authorities."

    A Brief History
Part 1: The Beginning: A Call to Radical Discipleship Koinonia Farm began in 1942, when Clarence and Florence Jordan and Mabel and Martin England came to Sumter County, Georgia to live out the teachings of Jesus amidst the poverty and racism of the rural South. They envisioned forming an interracial community where blacks and whites could live and work together in a spirit of partnership. Based on a radical call to discipleship, Koinonia's very presence confronted racism, militarism and materialism with their commitment to:
  • Treat all human beings with dignity and justice
  • Choose love over violence.
  • Share all possessions and live simply.
  • Be stewards of the land and its natural resources. Part 2: Crossroads By 1968, Koinonia was at a crossroads. Local violence had tapered off, and now only two families were living on the farm, including the Jordans. Clarence had begun to devote more of his time to his Cotton Patch translations of the New Testament. They found themselves searching for a renewed focus, unsure whether Koinonia's end had come, when Clarence received a brief note from Millard Fuller, "What do you have up your sleeve?"
