In the former Soviet Union, the problem is magnified by the fact that society has traditionally ostracized those with disabilities and the institutions set up to serve them receive virtually no financial support. A number of NGOs, however, are trying to remedy the situation, offering the disabled new ways to play an active role in society. The House of Social Therapy, in Tbilisi, Georgia, serves young people and adults in need of special care. Founded in 1990, the NGO engages disabled young people in a wide variety of work and social activities that allow them to participate with others in interesting and productive ways. Among the many pursuits offered are weaving, cooking, candlemaking, publishing, gardening and housekeeping, as well as painting, drawing, modeling, speech work, drama and music. Through these activities, young people can connect with society through fun and useful work, often in ways that surprise parents who were unable to draw out their children when they were isolated at home. Georgia's huge social and economic crisis made opening a day home for the disabled very difficult. But because the day home meant so much to its members, the young people themselves were sometimes able to help the group solve the problems it faced. For example, the minibus used to pick up and drop off day home clients broke down in 1992. It was not easy to repair because of the difficulty of finding spare parts and the high cost of labor. Sophia, a child suffering from Down's Syndrome, was so upset that she could not get to the center, she told her father, "I don't want to sit at home. I want to go to my place of work. You must help!" Sophia's father loaned the home his own minibus until the one belonging to the center could be fixed.
