Atlanta's Urban Heat Alters Weather Patterns
April 26, 1999: As the heat builds during a blistering summer day in Atlanta, Georgia, you can almost hear the clouds overhead cry, "Let's get ready to rumble!" Urban growth has transformed Atlanta's environment, creating a uniquely altered arena of weather. Because urban areas both generate and trap heat, a bubble or "urban heat island" forms around the city. The temperature in Atlanta is 5 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit higher than outlying areas, and this excess heat produces increased rainfall and thunderstorms.

Solving Sprawl: Introduction by Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director Growth is good. At least that's been the American credo up to now. Blessed with lands that seemed limitless, challenged to "go west" and tame the wilderness, our history, our "manifest destiny," has been to clear the forests, cut roads through rock, pave and plow our country, and create cities. The American mission to conquer and settle the land shaped our character. And we got good at it. Too good. Now at the start of a new century and a new millennium, Americans no longer reflexively equate progress with development. In fact, because the costs and consequences of poorly planned development have become clear and common, Americans are clamoring for better, smarter ways to grow.

How Will Course Credit on the Quebec Program Be Handled?
You will apply to North Georgia College and State University as a transient student by requesting a "Letter of Transient Permission" from the registrar at your university. You will include this letter with your application (See "How Do I Apply" section below). Once in Quebec, you will take courses which are brought back to NGCSU under our own course numbers ( See the attached sheet ). When the program is over, the program director will have NGCSU Registrar's Office send a copy of your transcript to your own institution. How Will The Courses I Take At Laval Count In My Program Of Study? First of all, you should consult with your academic advisor when applying for the Quebec Program. It is your advisor who decides if the courses will count as required or elective courses. Laval courses do count for the language requirement in the University System of Georgia. Credit is offered form the elementary through graduate level. Since Laval is on a different academic system than we have in the United States, the actual Laval courses will be regrouped into NGCSU (and USG) course numbers such that you will receive credit from NGCSU in the following way.
Credit for courses taken with Laval faculty
6 hours of 1000-level credit for courses taken with Laval faculty during weeks 2 - 6
    • if you place in elementary level A (little or no prior study of French)

Georgia Researchers Awarded $600,000 Grant to Study Park Use
    Emory University
Tuesday, 9 December 2003 Why are some urban parks well-worn with use, while others sit empty? Why do some people head for a neighborhood park every chance they get, while others never go? Why do some park visitors jog, swim, or engage in other forms of vigorous exercise, while others do nothing more adventurous than feeding the pigeons? A group of Georgia researchers headed by Dr. Howard Frumkin, chairman of the department of environmental and occupational health in Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, have been awarded a grant of nearly $600,000 by The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to study urban neighborhood parks as a setting for physical activity. Active Living Research, a national program supported by RWJF, selected the research team as one of seven new grantees that are studying relationships between the built environment and physical activity levels. The researchers, who are drawn from the University of Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as Emory, share an interest in promoting daily physical activity as a means of combating America's twin national epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes.
