Georgian Churches and Flowers of the Caucasus
In the fourth century, St Nino of Cappadocia converted the Georgians to Christianity; during the next thousand years they built many exquisite churches. Once the market garden of the USSR, the corridor of fertile plains and valleys linking the Black and Caspian Seas is the Georgian homeland. To the north is the barrier of the Caucasus, to the south the harsh plateau of Armenia and eastern Turkey. The flora of Georgia is varied and rich in endemics. In particular, as the snows retreat from the mountain pastures, early alpines are at their best. This year for the first time we are visiting the headwaters of the river Rioni, an area of spectacular mountain scenery with a rich flora. We shall also explore the mountainsides above the Georgian Military Highway, with their unique churches. To gain most from this itinerary, participants should be prepared to walk in the mountains for several hours on at least some days.

The Georgian Military Highway, from Tbilisi to Qazbegi, is still the only all-weather road over the Caucasus. At Mtskheta, ancient capital of Georgia, are several examples of mediaeval Georgian architecture at its best.

ARCHITECTURE
Georgian scholars generally agree that the famous cupola structures that dominate Georgian ecclesiastic architecture can be traced to domestic dwellings with circular floor plans that date as far back as the fourth to third millennium BC. These dwellings ultimately evolved into the darbazi structures that have survived into modern times. Their significance lay in the transition of the square substructure into a beehive dome. Variations on the central domed church appeared in the sixth and seventh centuries. termed "free-cross"churches, they are cruciform in plan. One variety (Idleti, from the sixth century, and Samtsverisi, from the seventh century) is characterized by having the north, south, and west sections of the cross of the cross end in a quadrate and the eastern apse in a horseshoe. Another variation, also developed in the sixth century and extended in subsequent centuries into highly diverse formulations, was the tetraconch configuration (imagine a square surrounded by a clover leaf). The sixth-century Church of Dzveli-Gavazi is one of its oldest examples. The cathedral of Ninotsminda (sixth century) is the earliest large centralized ecclesiastical building that has survived. The turn of the seventh century was an epoch of extraordinary architectural achievement, as the early tentative forms with which Georgian architects struggled to achieve their vision found harmonious completion. The tetraconch Church of Dzhvari is perhaps the shining example of this artistic triumph. original in design and conception, it soon became a model for many other architects. Sioni Ateni, Dzveli Shuamta, Martvili, and Dranda are all churches classified as of the Dzhvari type.

Wary Of Protests, Churches Eye Closing During Summit
POSTED: 3:53 p.m. EDT May 6, 2004
SAVANNAH, Ga. After a gunman tried to set fire to the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist seven months ago, the towering Catholic church in downtown Savannah isn't taking any chances with the G-8 Summit.

The cathedral, normally open to tourists, plans to lock its doors June 7-11. Morning and noon Masses have been canceled. Security guards will keep watch outside and any funerals will move to another church. Concerned about damage from protests or terrorists when President George W. Bush hosts the world leaders' summit on Sea Island next month, some churches and synagogues in Savannah's historic district are considering extra precautions to protect their 19th century sanctuaries. The 1873 cathedral that towers over Lafayette Square sustained $364,000 in damage during the arson attempt Oct. 7. The church rector, Monsignor William O. O'Neill, told parishioners last weekend the cathedral wouldn't risk being a target during the summit.

Suspect with satanic impulses confesses to burning churches
Associated Press/February 28, 1999
By JR Ross MuncieE, Ind. As many as 50 church fires in the Midwest and South over the past five years may have been solved all at once with the arrest of a man fascinated with the satanic. Paramedics became suspicious of Jay Scott Ballinger, 36, because he waited two days before seeking treatment for severe burns he claimed to have suffered in a bonfire. A Ball State University police officer, acting on a hunch, questioned him. Finally, last weekend, Ballinger admitted to federal authorities that he burned 30 to 50 churches in 11 states between 1994 and 1998. So far, agents have connected Ballinger to close to 20 arsons, and he has been charged in seven of them, all involving rural churches in Indiana. Agents said they aren't certain of a motive, but Ballinger's interest in the occult is clear. Police said a few years ago, he persuaded 50 teen-agers to sign contracts in blood pledging their souls to the devil. Ballinger's stripper girlfriend and another man have admitted taking part in burning an Indiana church where they painted an upside-down cross on the steps as part of a satanic ritual.

Atlanta Journal-Constitution
African Methodist Episcopal
New Hope AME Church , 3012 Arden Rd., 30305, (404) 261-4
Records of the property date to 1872, when Buckhead landowner James H. Smith, in his will, deeded three acres to a small group of servants to provide for a church and a school for their children. According to the Atlanta History Center, the "New Hope camp ground" had been in use since 1869, with residents frequently gathering for preaching and dinner on the ground. The first structure on the property, a tabernacle, was followed by a plank and log structure built sometime in the 1890s. This was destroyed by fire in 1927. In 1928, the congregation built the basement of the present sanctuary, topping it with the present sanctuary in 1936. New Hope Cemetery at 3011 Arden Rd., contains burials beginning in 1889. It was established when Dr. James H. Smith deeded an acre of land in 1872 to his former slaves.
