HISTORY
Beginning in the spring of 2002, an Ad Hoc Work Group for Child Advocacy began exploring how to make child advocacy efforts in this state more effective. Seed money was provided by participating organizations, as well as by foundations, to support a thoughtful and comprehensive assessment of how to advance the agenda of improving outcomes for children and families. The process was designed to assure participation by a broad array of stakeholders from throughout the state. Meaningful input and involvement by important stakeholders was essential to generating the commitment and collective will that would be needed to move forward.
During the following fourteen months, a series of surveys, research papers and meetings of advocates and service providers helped to assess the scope and nature of current advocacy activities in the state and the experiences of other states and organizations in promoting public commitment to children and families. But Bronwyn Talaga saw a bright child behind the angry face, and signs of a natural leader. She made an investment no one else had been willing to make. Each day Bronwyn, a Vision Youth outreach worker at Jubilee Christian Center in Seattle, met with the girl, helping her refocus when her anger began to boil. She worked evenings and weekends with the girl to meet deadlines for big projects.
Bronwyn's investment showed dividends. Assignments were done on time. The once-struggling student managed a B average while becoming a leader on her school volleyball team. One teacher described her as a "delight to have in class."

Vision Youth
It's probably safe to say that this girl wouldn't have the promising future she does today if Bronywn hadn't entered her life.
Vision Youth is World Vision's response to the unforgiving cycle of poverty in the United States. It is a youth-focused initiative that develops strong local leaders among youth who can work to bring hope to their impoverished communities.
At the core of Vision Youth are youth outreach workers, compassionate adults from the community who know the challenges and issues young people face, and who are committed to providing a caring, stable influence in their lives. They are based in local churches, which often are the only stable institutions in depressed neighborhoods. Vision Youth not only trains these outreach workers, but also offers technical assistance to pastors and congregations that helps enhance and broaden their involvement with neighborhood families in need.

    Family Literacy Workshops Held
Workshop storytellers Jean Whitehorse (New Mexico) and Oneal Issac (Mississippi) With funding from the Viburnum Foundation, the Center for the Book sponsored two regional workshops in September that provided training for representatives from rural libraries and communities that received 1998 family literacy grants from the foundation. Held in cooperation with state library agencies and local literacy organizations from seven states, the workshops in Jackson, Miss. (Sept. 9-10) and Albuquerque, N.M. (Sept. 16-17) launched the new Viburnum Foundation/Center for the Book Family Literacy Project (see the LC Information Bulletin, May 1998.) "More than 75 people participated in each workshop, and we were delighted with the results," said Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole. "Special thanks go to Center for the Book consultant Virginia Mathews, the workshop coordinator, and to the Mississippi Library Commission and the New Mexico State Library for their support. The three-year grant we received from the Viburnum Foundation for this project, coming on the heels of the successful completion of our five-year Library-Head Start-Museum partnership project, continues the center's interest in family literacy and in encouraging collaboration on behalf of books and reading among libraries and other community organizations that serve children, youth and families."
