http://www.murphyharpst.org/programsKindOfChild.html
What Kind of Child or Youth Does Murphy-Harpst Help?
The Harpst campus residential treatment center is designed to serve children or adolescents who have emotional and/or behavioral problems that do not require intensive hospitalization but which are too severe to permit a non-secure living environment and which require specialized psychiatric and psychological evaluation, assessment and intervention. Typical behaviors characteristic of children needing residential treatment are aggressive behavior (destruction of property and fighting with others), frequent running away, severe depression, self-injurious behavior, violent outbursts, severe panic attacks, severe school phobia, and other behaviors serious enough to preclude continued functioning in a family, at school, or in the community. The Harpst campus residential treatment center does not serve children who are considered medically fragile, are active sexual predators, who are actively suicidal or homicidal, who have moderate to severe mental retardation, or whose needs exceed the resources of the organization.

The Great Atlanta Youth Walk is based on a simple idea: powerless children need our help. We have the power to make the difference!
The annual Youth Walk is the only event of its kind to highlight the positive aspects of Atlanta's southside. The Walk takes place on the southside, demonstrates the southside community's concern for youth, and raises much-needed money for southside programs that are making a difference in the lives of children.
The Youth Walk is based on the premise that churches, schools and community organizations form the first line of defense in support of children and families. For this reason, the Youth Walk puts money back into the community.

Mission: The mission of The Vashti Center is to provide children, youth and families with the resources necessary to grow physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually. Our goal is to change destructive behavior patterns and establish new behaviors and coping skills, to promote increased self-esteem, to establish more appropriate perceptions of self and others, and to enjoy life to the fullest.
Our Vision: The Vashti Center provides intervention. We enable children, youth and families to gain control of their behaviors, and teach them how to build healthy relationships. We show them their options and help them to benefit from educational, recreational, social and spiritual opportunities. We teach them how to maintain appropriate and consistent behavior.
Our Past: In 1907, after outgrowing the house, La Cubana, an old cigar factory, was discovered and the Women's Home Missionary Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church South bought 65 acres and buildings from the estate of Archibold T. Macintyre. The next year seventy girls moved in. Vashti had waited patiently year after year for the heart of a great church to discover her needs and respond generously. In 1919, the Centenary Movement of the Methodist Episcopal Church South raised $75,000 to once again restore the old cigar factory.
