The Next Generation School Project
The Next Generation School Project has promoted improved academic achievement and a rigorous curriculum by allowing local school districts to design and implement their own improvement plans and initiatives. Effects of the local improvement plans on student achievement were evaluated over the following school year. For eight years, the Georgia Partnership for Excellence in Education has provided guidance for the development and operation of The Next Generation School Project, but local systems received complete autonomy to create and implement their own improvement plans. The Next Generation School Project is shifting its focus to increasing student achievement through the use of alternative school schedules, such as extended school day and an extended school year. The project has chosen to award grants to five school systems that are augmenting the traditional school calendar.

Spencer High math teacher John Gillis was concerned. During the public forum Tuesday night at the Columbus school, he heard the local state school board member mention a possible drastic change to what and how his students are supposed to learn. Instead of teaching algebra, geometry, trigonometry and calculus in succeeding high school years, officials revamping Georgia's K-12 curriculum are thinking about the Japanese way: integrating those concepts each year. Gillis concluded, "Without the proper technological support and training, this will send teachers into a tailspin." Peggy Nielson, the board's representative from the 2nd Congressional District, assured the teacher, "This board will not vote for anything without the appropriate support for implementation."

SAVANNAH, Georgia (AP) A 17-year-old high school senior working at a Hooters won't get class credit for her job because the restaurant, known for its waitresses in tight T-shirts and hot pants, is too racy, school district officials decided Thursday. Laura Williams wanted her hostess job, for which she wears long pants and a collared shirt, to count as part of a work-study program that lets students leave school early so they can work for vocational course credit. Williams plans to keep the job and give up the credit. She and her father had asked the school board to overrule the school superintendent's decision that Hooters is an inappropriate workplace for the Effingham County High School program. All five members of the county school board voted down the restaurant.
