Hello everyone!!! I am still, on occation, involved with the school. I have not seen very many alumni these days but I did see Mike Subhan recently. I have almost (after forever) finished my degree in East Asian Studies - Japanese - and traveled to Japan two years ago and again this past summer. I will be looking for a job soon in Japan so I have my work cut out for me. I also have a home page . Have a good time and hope to hear from you!!!!! Name: Sam Shipp (now Sam Z. Damon)

After attending Fenster (on Blacklidge), I attended Linfield College in McMinnville Oregon. After a year there, I went to the University of Texas in Austin. Before graduating, I began 10 years of acting and when that became financially stupid, I ended up going to law school at the Baylor Law School in Waco, Texas. I am the District Public Defender in Las Cruces, New Mexico. I am married to a wonderful, fabulous, generous, caring, fine woman who happens to be sitting next to me watching me type this and I also have four great, talented, imaginative, cool kids, 17, 12, 11 and 9, two girls and two boys. Is that enough, honey?

News Bulletin Current Affairs Euro 2004 ... Reader Response Georgia: The Forgotten Children Many families cannot support their children and send them to work, like this girl at a nut-processing plant. Georgia’s children living in orphanages and boarding schools are unlikely to see an improvement in their lives any time soon. UNICEF workers are trying to ease the lives of these forgotten children.
The small former Soviet republic of Georgia, on the eastern edge of Europe, hit the headlines last November when tens of thousands of people stormed the parliament building, forcing President Eduard Shevardnadze to resign. Today, a new government and president are in place, which is keen to tackle the country’s chronic economic problems. Yet unemployment and corruption are rife, and poverty widespread. Many families cannot feed their children and place them in institutions. UNICEF’s child protection officer Maya Kuparadze in Georgia says some 4,500 children are placed in institutions, baby homes and orphanages. "The majority of kids in institutions are social orphans, and placed there because of poverty in their families and the incapability of their families to provide proper care for their kids," she explains.

WISHH Midwest Workshop Results in Counterpart International Introducing Textured Soy Protein to School Lunches in Republic of Georgia
June 2002 ....Thoric Cederstrom, a senior technical advisor for Counterpart International, participated in the World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) Midwest Workshop on May 8-10 in Illinois and Indiana. At the workshop, representatives of Private Voluntary Organizations like Counterpart expanded their knowledge about soy for international diets. As a result, Cederstrom took textured soy protein (tsp) to the Republic of Georgia where he started feeding trials for children in a new school lunch program funded by the Global Food for Education Initiative of USDA. Based on the success, Cederstom is now negotiating with private sector donors for more containers to fully launch Counterpart’s use of tsp. Why was Counterpart International interested in a pilot project with tsp in Georgia? “We see TSP as an excellent product for our school feeding program in conjunction with other traditional USDA commodities. It provides school-age children with an
excellent source of protein in a flexible form, i.e. that can be prepared in

IATP Georgia Holds Online Medical Resources Seminar
On May 17, the IATP center at the National Parliamentary Library of Georgia in Tbilisi hosted a seminar for doctors from the local military hospital. The goal of the seminar was to show the audience the necessity of posting Georgian Web resources online. The participants found the seminar useful, especially in their collaboration with the NATO program "Partnership for Peace Information Management System" (PIMS). PIMS is an American program that strengthens partnership and collaboration through the use of information technologies. The audience was introduced to medical Web resources available on the Internet and received handouts with Georgian, English, and Russian medical online resources. The participants of the seminar requested that similar seminars be held in the future. Internet for Journalists
On May 17, the IATP center in Poti, Georgia held the seminar "Internet for Journalists." Eight representatives from local television stations attended the seminar and received information about online topics relevant to their field of expertise. The participants discussed and compared local and international television. All participants mentioned that online resources could improve their work, and found it necessary to have Georgian Web resources for Georgian TV stations. Following the seminar, the participants decided to create websites devoted to Georgian TV stations with the help of IATP Web development courses and free computer usage.
