Welcome to the Department of Early Childhood Education's web page. This is an exciting place to be! We are one of the largest departments devoted to early childhood education in the country. We have 37 full time faculty and staff members. We are proud of our accomplishments both nationally and within the state of Georgia.
Our Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) undergraduate program prepares instructional personnel to teach young children from pre-school through elementary grades. This cohort model offers extensive field-based experiences and includes placements in schools with multicultural populations in urban and suburban schools. Students are placed in a wide variety of grade levels from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade during the four semester program. In addition, college coursework is developmentally sequenced in order to support and extend the field placements. We pride ourselves on the close professional relationship and close personal attention we offer in this and all programs. Our faculty work hard together to provide a coherent and high quality program where our graduates are able to significantly impact student learning, growth, and development.
We have two Master's Degree (M.Ed.) programs, both unique and exciting in their own way. The Urban Alternative Preparation Program, a Georgia Teacher Alternative Preparation Program, prepares people with a baccalaureate degree to teach in urban schools. The first year of intensive study includes placement in an urban school. In the urban environment students have a year of mentoring by faculty dedicated to understanding urban classrooms. After certification, teachers are employed b the schools and can continue working for another year to earn a master’s degree. This year also includes mentoring from ECE faculty.

Guide to Richmond County Schools
Web posted Thursday, July 24, 2003
During the summer break, Richmond County school board members approved several changes to the Code of Student Conduct and Discipline. Here's a few:
Uniform changes: Denim was added to the list of acceptable fabrics for pupils in kindergarten through eighth grade to wear, allowing certain types of jeans. The revised dress code also mandates standard colors for tops and shirts. Acceptable colors will be solids in red, white, blue and one color of each school's choice. The biggest change: Parents will no longer be able to opt out of the dress code. Beepers and cell phones: Pupils may leave cell phones in their cars. They also can take them on extracurricular field trips but can use them only in an emergency or telling a parent about an arrival time and place. The procedure for picking up confiscated beepers and cell phones has been revised. The items will be sent to Public Safety and will be returned to parents at the end of 30 days, if it is a first offense.

We know what "combating" homelessness looks like. We attack on two fronts. On one front, for example, we open shelters for the homeless but (since we don't want them to stay in the shelters) we make them as unwelcoming as possible. On the other front, we pass anti-camping legislation that criminalizes those who won't stay in the shelters. This legislation allows (or compels) the police to harass the homeless, who are "out of place," who turn up where we don't want them to be. Beyond Civilization

About our Schools

Every Columbia County school is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, demonstrating a commitment to achieve and maintain high academic standards. The school system offers a diverse curriculum to include addressing the needs of gifted children as well as those with special needs.
The elementary schools, grades K-5 address student intellectual, social, physical and artistic development while focusing on the core subjects of communication skills, math, science, health, social studies, music and art.
At the middle school level, grades six through eight, students are divided into teams of approximately seventy-five to one hundred and twenty students led by a team of teachers who specifically provide instruction on core subjects. They also work together to present the subject matter in a manner so that students can see the relationships among the disciplines of math, science, social studies and communication skills. Middle school students also gain exposure to optional subject material such as technology lab, business, family and consumer science, band, music and visual arts, setting the stage for further exploration of these subjects when they go to high school. The high school curriculum is composed of courses in communication skills, fine arts, foreign language, mathematics, physical education and health, social studies, technology and career education. Additionally, at both the middle and high school level students have the opportunity to compete in a wide variety of team sports, which serves to develop the student's sense of teamwork and competition.
