Geometry in the Middle Grades Overview : In this lesson, students develop informal geometry and spatial thinking. They are given opportunities to create plans, build models, draw, sort, classify, and engage in geometric and mathematical creativity through problem solving.
Mathematical Learning Objectives:
  • To provide hands-on experiences in constructing two- and three-dimensional shapes. To develop the ability to visualize two- and three-dimensional shapes and to recognize them in the environment. To observe and identify properties related to two- and three-dimensional shapes. To develop and review geometry vocabulary and concepts and provide opportunities for students to converse about geometric ideas. To develop and assess thinking skills such as sorting, classifying, and making and testing conjectures. To investigate properties of geometric shapes by using computer technology. To engage in explorations designed to enhance spatial visualization skills.

Literature Connection: Alphabet City and City by Numbers by Stephen T. Johnson; Shapes, Shapes, Shapes by Tana Hoban
Mathematical Strand: Geometry
Topic: Acute, obtuse, right, complementary, supplementary, and straight angles
Grade Level: 6-8 (SPED)
Lesson Created by: Natasha Kelly, Fort Riley Middle School, Fort Riley, Kansas
Lesson Description
Materials
  • Books and graphic organizer for the definitions
1. Launching the lesson:
  • Review the definitions of the angles. Students write the definitions on the graphic organizer. Ask them to point out each in the room.
2. Developing the lesson:
  • Begin by reading Shapes, Shapes, Shapes and find the various angles in each picture. Discuss what characteristics make the angle pointed out an obtuse, or acute, or supplementary, etc. Have the students look through other picture books to practice finding angles in the real world.
3. Closure/Discussion/Elaboration:
  • Copy a picture from a clip art nature book and have them trace the angles in colored pencil. Each type of angle is assigned a color.

Math Building a Model of a Dream Home Three-Dimensional Shapes AUTHOR: Terry Sayre, Tigard, OR GRADE LEVEL/SUBJECT: 2-5, geometry OVERVIEW: In this activity, students will identify what shapes architects use to build houses. Students will then explore these shapes by building a model of their "dream" home. OBJECTIVES: The student will 1. identify how architects use shapes. 2. work cooperatively to create and execute a plan to build a model of a home. 3. create a cone, cube, rectangular prism, and cylinder. 4. use at least three, three-dimensional shapes in their dream home. RESOURCES/MATERIALS: patterns for three-dimensional shapes, construction paper, tag board, scissors, glue. ACTIVITIES AND PROCEDURES: Introduction: 1. "How many of you know what an architect does? What is the difference between architecture and an architect?"
