Geological Society of London
Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition The Geological Society of London is a learned society A learned society is a society that exists to promote an academic discipline or group of disciplines. Membership may be open to all, may require possession of some qualification, or may be an honour conferred by election (as is the case with the oldest learned society still in existence, the Royal Society of London in the U.K.). Most learned societies are non-profit organizations. Their activities typically include holding regular conferences for the presentation and discussion of new research results, and publishing or sponsoring academic journals in their discipline. Some also act as professional bodies, regulating the activities of their members in the public interest or the collective interest of the membership.

REPORT ON THE 5TH IAS SPECIAL LECTURE TOUR 1999
It is an enormous privilege to be chosen to be the IAS Special Lecturer and thus have the chance to tour a range of countries and meet so many diverse people. The initial problem is to decide which invitations to accept. With great regret I turned down many from places to which I would dearly have loved to go, but, since the object of the lectureship is to reach out to those whose contact with the western world is or has been limited, I selected Jordan, India, Pakistan and 6 cities in central and eastern Europe, Dresden, Kraków, Budapest, Bratislava, Zagreb and Bucharest. I could not have chosen better. In every country I was cosseted and entertained and was able to meet a very wide range of sedimentologists and other geoscientists, in many cases bringing together people who rarely associate with each other. The topics I offered were "Controls on Clastic Coastal Systems", "Controls on Deep-water Clastic Systems", "Sequence Stratigraphy" and "Fashions and Models in Geology". The last topic I dropped from the repertoire early on to concentrate on the other three, all of which addressed the problem of keeping up to date with the latest concepts without being carried away with the latest fashion. I had with me a selection of slides, more than I could ever use, and sent abstracts and copies of figures to my hosts beforehand. They could then prepare a course book if they wished and I could vary the content, depth and style of each course to fit, as far as it is ever possible, the anticipated audience, no doubt with very mixed results. Length varied from a one hour lecture to half-day (3-4 hour) sessions with breaks. In some cases I combined all 3 topics into one lecture or course, concentrating on the highlights and linking the topics together.

The Canadian Geological Foundation:
A Significant Supporter of Geoscience In Canada
In 1968, the federal Department of Consumer and Corporate Affairs issued Letters Patent incorporating the Canadian Geological Foundation. The first objective of the Foundation was defined in the Letters Patent to be "to receive and maintain a fund or funds and to apply from time to time all or any part thereof and the income therefrom for charitable and educational purposes in Canada relating to the science of geology and, without limiting the generality of the foregoing and for the said purposes, for providing assistance in the education of students and for promoting, undertaking, carrying out, encouraging and assisting recognized charitable organizations in promoting, undertaking and carrying out all phases of study, research and dissemination of knowledge relating to the science of geology." As of 2001, the Foundation has quietly awarded just over 300 grants with a total value of more than $1,000,000, in the process becoming an important supporter of geoscience in Canada.
Governance
The membership of the Foundation, prescribed in its by-laws, comprises: the President of the Canadian Geoscience Council, the President of the Geological Association of Canada, a Director General of the Geological Survey of Canada, a Geologist who is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, two Geologists holding positions in separate Canadian provincial agencies, a Geoscientist in a department of a Canadian university, and such other Geologists, not exceeding seven in number, who are members of adhering societies of the Canadian Geoscience Council. At least two of the latter group must be associated with industry. Members elect a President, Treasurer and Secretary, who also serve on the Board of Directors. The Board, which must comprise at least 3 and not greater than 7 members, is elected from the membership to manage the Foundation's business. Members and Directors serve a 3-year term, which may be renewed for a second term.
