GEOLOGY RESEARCH GROUP CSM Research Group Members Current Group Activities
The Geology Research Group is involved in projects ranging from pure 'academic' geology, through to applied research directly relevant to the earth resources industries. In particular the group has expertise in:
  • the geological formation and evaluation of mineral resources (including industrial minerals, precious metals, energy minerals and diamonds) applied mineralogy environmental geology and geochemistry applied sedimentology structural and regional geology
These activities are pursued worldwide, but the majority of the group are also engaged in one or more research projects of direct relevance to South West England. Several of the research areas overlap with the interests of the two other research groups at CSM. Individual staff research interests in this group include: Professor Peter Scott
Geology, mineralogy and genesis of mineral deposits, especially industrial rocks and minerals, clay mineralogy, mineralisation in ultrabasic rocks, geology of the Caribbean, industrial minerals in developing countries. Dr Jens Andersen
Mafic-ultramafic layered intrusions, platinum-group mineralisation.

Holocene Climate Change and Human Impact on the Landscape,
Wadi Shumylya, Yemen The goals of this project are to document past interactions between human activity, landscape modification, and climate in a region which is presently extremely arid and supports little vegetation. Abundant archaeological evidence exists that suggests agriculture was much more widespread and evolved alongside the development of irrigation technology during a period when rainfall was more plentiful. We are looking for additional evidence in the region to test the hypothesis that cultivation of domesticated crops was being carried out as early as 7,000 years ago, and even in the earliest agricultural activities, humans were having a substantial impact on the landscape through the modification of fluvial systems. Research is also being conducted to document the timing and magnitude of changing precipitation patterns in the region using a variety of paleoclimate proxy data. Research is being carried out collaboratively with the Minnesota RASA (Roots of Agriculture in Southern Arabia) project, headed by Dr. Joy McCorriston, and the Ministry of Antiquities in Yemen. Funding for the project has been provided by the National Science Foundation, University of Minnesota, and Canadian Occidental Petroleum Company (CANOXY). Fieldwork began in February-March, 1998, and hopefully will continue in January-February 2000 (depending on funding). View looking across the southwest corner of the Arabian peninsula towards Africa. The Arabian Sea is in the center left, and the Red Sea is on the Right. Wadi Shumylya is part of a tributary system to Wadi Hadramout, a region of extensive archaeological exploration. Prior to about 5,000 years ago, seasonal monsoonal rains originating in the Indian Ocean - Arabian Sea penetrated farther north across the southern Arabian peninsula than they do today. Although still moisture limited, adequate rainfall and more abundant vegetation supported the cultural shift to agrarian subsistence farming, perhaps as early as 7,000 - 8,000 years ago.

Research Projects currently available
The following research projects are available in 2002. All these projects are designed to lead to the Ph.D. degree unless otherwise stated, and prospective students should have an Upper Second or First Class BSc degree. It is envisaged that research will begin in October 2002 although exceptions will be made if necessary. Applicants are invited to contact the relevant supervisor(s) or the Head of the Department for further information on projects and funding. Formal applications normally require the provision of a CV and completion of the UCD PhD application form LINKING DRAINAGE EVOLUTION AND STRATIGRAPHY: NEW INSIGHT FROM FELDSPAR PROVENANCE STUDIES Dr P.D.W. Haughton and Dr J. Graham (Trinity College Dublin) ORIGIN AND 3D CHARACTERISATION OF CARBONIFEROUS 'CALP' BEDROCK BENEATH THE CITY OF DUBLIN. Dr P.D.W. Haughton Dr I.D. Somerville and Dr J. Graham (Trinity College Dublin) The bedrock beneath Dublin is dominated by a poorly understood succession of argillaceous limestones and shales (‘Calp’) for which site investigation work for the Port Tunnel has provided unparalleled core coverage. The project will combine a detailed analysis of dense borehole grids and outcrops with the parallel study of better-exposed Upper Palaeozoic analogues. The aim is to provide (i) new insight into the origin of ‘Calp’ and generic models for deep-water carbonate sedimentation and (ii) a 3D stratigraphic/structural cellular model permitting the examination of relationships between sedimentology and fractures and incorporating key rock attributes for future engineering and hydrogeological modelling.

Geology Student Research
Bartleson-Prather Research Scholarships
In 1998 we first received a $10,000 donation Paul Rady ('78) and Peter Dea ('76) ) to start a student summer research scholarship program. The Bartleson Prather Fund for Excellence in Geology provides a scholarship and research stipend for students, who are between their junior and senior year. The stipend enables students to conduct geologic research in the summer without taking a financial beating. The vast majority of our students work full-time in the summer and part-time all year to be able to go to college, so this scholarship allows them to make some money in the summer but also learn and grow, and thus get a head start on their career. This fund has continued to grow since then with over donated by different WSC geology alumni. If you or your company might be interested in contributing to the fund let us know.

As one of the world's largest nickel mining centres and home of Inco Ltd., Falconbridge Ltd., Laurentian University, and the Ontario Geological Survey/Ontario Geoscience Laboratories (located on the LU campus), Sudbury provides an ideal environment for research on magmatic sulphide deposits. Our students work and interact with a large group of scientists studying the geology, mineralogy, geochemistry, and petrology of magmatic and hydrothermal ore deposits, including MERC/Department of Earth Sciences faculty, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students; mining company geologists; OGS staff geologists; and OGL staff scientists. Researchers have access to excellent computing and analytical facilities, including state-of-the-art equipment for electron probe microanalysis, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and thermal ionization mass spectrometry. Most research opportunities are fully-funded and include living stipends, field expenses, analytical expenses, and meeting expenses. All projects will provide the opportunity to do cutting-edge research on world-class ore deposits using state-of-the-art analytical equipment; many will include opportunities for summer employment with mining companies.

Shales and Reconstruction of Ancient Environments.
If you don't know where you are going it's the journey that counts!
Shales and mudstones are very fine grained terrigenous clastic sedimentary rocks, and they constitute approximately two-thirds of all sediments on earth. Even though a major share of the earth's sedimentary record and thus its history is recorded in them, shales and mudstones have been studied very little because of their fine grain size. Recent research has demonstrated that a lot of valuable information can be extracted from shales and mudstones, pertaining to ancient environments, climates, ocean circulation, and the history of life.
Further studies will be beneficial to the solution of engineering problems associated with ground movements in the construction of roads and houses as these are often linked to underlying shale and mudstone formations. Also, shales and mudstones are the primary source of hydrocarbons, and better understanding of these materials, their composition, and the forces that bind them may be helpful in the search for energy resources for the future
