Objectives
Upon completion of this module, the student should be able to:
  • Distinguish between physical and historical geology.
  • Contrast the concept of catastrophism and uniformitarianism.
  • Describe the nature of scientific inquiry.
  • Have a basic understanding of and be able to explain the theory for the origin of the solar system and earth.
  • Describe the earth's basic internal structure.
  • Describe the three types of plate tectonic motion and give examples of which type occurs where on the Earth.
  • Understand the rock cycle and how the formation of various types of rocks can be interrelated.

Definition of Physical Geology Age of the Earth Scientific Method Origin of the Universe ... Earth's Surface
    What is Geology?
Geology is divided into two broad areas:
    • Physical geology
    • (examines materials Earth is made of and processes occurring on and beneath the surface of the earth.)
    • Historical geology
    • (examines origin of the Earth, origin of life, and changes in Earth and life through time)

Subject: geomorphology as a field of study
I have a question for everyone. What do you say to the geologists who claim that there is no longer a need for the study of geomorphology, that it is nothing more than physical geology? Our school is in the process of a semester conversion, and the geomorphology course was a casulty of the process. Geology dropped it, but I was successful in adding it to the geography curriculum. There seems to be no small degree of antipathy toward the subject among the geologists here on campus. So, I wondered how others have handled the question. Thanks, Paul R. Larson Paul R. The study of geology includes time invariant processes following the laws of physical science but it is tempered by the recognition that these processes occur in a complex framework, the result of previous geologic history. The need to understand both history and process makes geology inherently interdisciplinary.

Specific Guidelines and Criteria for Courses Submitted in
GEOLOGY, PHYSICAL GEOGRAPHY, AND EARTH SCIENCE
Specific guidelines and criteria in the natural sciences require that courses in the natural sciences should be broad in scope and content rather than specific to an aspect of a discipline, and may include interdisciplinary science courses. Courses in the natural sciences must include laboratory experiences which emphasize the scientific method. General studies courses in Geology, Physical Geography, and Earth Science must include at least one designated period per week that involves hands-on laboratory or field experiences with emphasis on the scientific method. Courses in this area may include courses in Environmental Science. Topics covered in an introductory course in Geology include rocks and minerals, composition of Earth's interior, plate tectonics, geomorphic processes and the development of the present day landscape, natural resources, origin and evolution of Earth through time, and life on Earth through time as recorded in rocks and fossils. Topics covered in an introductory course in Physical Geography include weather, climate and climate regions, natural vegetation and vegetation regions, natural landscape processes and natural landscape regions, natural resources, soils and soil regions, and water resources.
