The BGS Geoscience Data Index (GDI)
New version released 31 March 2004 This site provides a map-based index to datasets that we have collected or have obtained from other sources. You can enquire further about how you can license our datasets and order borehole records using the on-line order form. When developing this service further, we value user feedback and would be grateful if you could take a few moments to complete our user questionnaire Due to third party data licencing constraints, it is no longer possible to access the data held in the GDI by any other means than through this web site. Visitors who have previously requested borehole records using the GDI should now use the new dedicated borehole ordering facility

Geologists are amazing. They know hundreds of words for different sorts of dirt and hundreds of words for things it does when left alone for a few million years. (By: Thomas Kettenring) You Might Be a Geologist If ...
  • You own more pieces of quartz than underwear. Your rock collection weighs more than you do. Your rock garden is located inside your house You can pronounce the word "molybdenite" correctly on the first try. You don't think of "cleavage" the same way everyone else does. You have ever uttered the phrase "have you tried licking it" with no sexual connotations involved You think the primary function of road cuts is tourist attractions. You find yourself compelled to examine individual rocks in driveway gravel. You're planning on using a pick and shovel while you're on vacation. Your internet home page has pictures of your rocks. You will walk across eight lanes of freeway traffic to see if the outcrop on the other side of the highway is the same type of rock as the side you're parked on. You can point out where Tsumeb is on a world globe. The baggage handlers at the airport know you by name and refuse to help with your luggage.

GeoRef is the most comprehensive database in the geosciences and continues to grow by more than 80,000 references a year (82,000 in 2002). The database contains over 2.4 million references to geoscience journal articles, books, maps, conference papers, reports and theses. You can gain access to this vast amount of information through searching on the web, online, or in the GeoRef CD. Also available in print as the Bibliography and Index of Geology Check out the GeoRef Preview Database This special database highlights references to geoscience publications which have recently been added to our GeoRef production system. Each weekend, completed references are removed from the Preview database and transferred to GeoRef, new references are added, and changes are made in the remaining data.

W elcome to the home page for the Bureau of Topographic and Geologic Survey, or the “Pennsylvania Geological Survey.” This is the fourth geological survey for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The first one was established by the legislature in 1836. With a long and proud history, we have seen a lot of technological change over the years with the most recent being the advent of the Internet. We are continuing to fulfill our traditional mission in the field, which is to collect impartial information on the Commonwealth's geology. Geological mapping projects are occurring across the state. New discoveries and insights are being made by our geologists and cooperating scientists and agencies. The dissemination of this information is where the web comes in.
