Indian Geology - Overview
Geology of India is as diverse as its geography and people. It contains rocks covering almost the entire spectrum of the Geological Time Scale. It has rocks severely deformed and metamorphosed as well as recently deposited alluvium which are yet to experience diagenesis. Even the fossil record is extremely diverse and includes the earliest stromatolites, invertebrates, vertebrates and plant fossils. Rock type and mineral deposits of many varieties can be found in this country. Such a diverse and complex geology needs to be studied very systematically. Stratigraphy covers study of rocks of a region and tracing down the geological history. Rocks as they occur now in the field have gone through some of the events like deposition, compaction, deformation, metamorphism and erosion. Some may experience many phases of deformation and metamorphism. Most of these events depend on the tectonic activities this part of the earth's crust has witnessed over the ages.

SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF EARTH SCIENCES
The Department of Earth Sciences is housed in the William B. Heroy Geology Laboratory at Syracuse University. There are eleven full-time faculty members who are actively engaged in research, teaching, and advising. A wide variety of research is conducted in our department, though our main strengths are in paleoclimatology, paleobiology, sedimentology, hydrogeology, geochronology, thermochronology, and tectonics. There are currently about 21 graduate students pursuing MS and PhD degrees, and 4 post-doctoral researchers. We are an active department with a weekly seminar series and state-of-the-art laboratory and teaching facilities. Department Overview Faculty

The Quaternary Period
The Quaternary Period includes the last 1.8 million years. One of the most significant aspects of this period is the expansion of Northern Hemisphere ice sheets collectively known as the "Ice Age". Evidence from the deep oceans indicate that there have been over two dozen cold (glacials) and warm (interglacial) periods during the last 2.4 million years. The most recent glaciation began about 125,000 years ago and climaxed about 21,000 years ago. At this time, over 30 percent of earth's surface was covered by ice, and sea level was at least 125 meters lower than present.

IGS Helps State Improve Waters Impacted by Acidic Mine Drainage
Water resources on land disturbed during surface coal mining activities not only carries high levels of acidity and sulfate, but potentially toxic levels of certain metals as well. Learn about the Indiana Geological Survey's role in efforts to restore these waters.
Mercury Content of Indiana Coals
Mercury emitted to the atmosphere from coal-fired power plants is not considered harmful, but it can chemically transform into a toxic form that can become concentrated in fish and birds. This article summarizes what has been learned by IGS researchers about mercury in Indiana coals.

An introduction to the Danish Lake District Ecomuseum
The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum offers fantastic nature as well as an interesting cultural history with some important monuments and relics from many important epochs in the history of Denmark. People have been attracted to this region ever since the end of the Glacial period due to the opportunities that the land, woods and fresh water have provided.
The Danish Lake District Ecomuseum aims to strengthen and improve the presentation of the region's culture and nature in order to provide the local people and the many guests to the area with the best possible experiences and possibilities. The area covered by the Danish Lake District Ecomuseum is approximately the area covered by the County of Skanderborg that existed up to 1970. It is an area of 1,719 square kilometres. The County of Skanderborg was also called "The Monastery County" because at its foundation, it was based on the properties of the Monasteries founded in the Middle Ages in the Lake District of Central Jutland. Write a 4-line (non-X-rated) poem about something geological in this lab room or about something geological you learned in lab this quarter...
We learned about basalt
It was all Gwyn's fault
She showed us a lot of stuff
She was really tough (Just joking!)
Geology is not hard
But the rocks we study are.
Through faults not of our own, but of the Earth,
Some are uplifted and given rebirth.
There was this granite from another planet...
Some minerals and rocks are put on display, I've come to know some, alright, okay! Plagioclase, biotite, and muscovite abundant, Over the quarter they've become redundant! My Ode to Rocks Rocks of all kinds From all sorts of times End up in our class So we can identify their clasts. There is a rock that is very polite... Geology lab is a long-time deal, But studying the Earth is worth skipping a meal. I will miss the reactions of hydrochloric acid with calcite. However, I'll probably visit very soon many stalagm- and stalact- ites. Garnets are red Olivine is green I love geology And I know you do, too.

If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.
