GENERAL General Earthquake Information . National Earthquake Information Center. If you want to learn about earthquakes this is certainly the place to go. This magnificent site has a wealth of information. For example there are sections on frequently asked questions, the largest earthquakes in the United States and the world, information on how earthquakes are measured, the principle faults in the United States, plate tectonics and their relationship with earthquakes, a glossary of seismology terms, and much more. There are even a couple of word search puzzles you can play with related to earthquakes and plate tectonics. Highly recommended. Earthquakes . The Tech Museum of Innovation. A wonderful site with a well illustrated, comprehensive introduction to earthquakes covering plate tectonics, seismographs, faults, the propagation of earthquake waves, earthquakes in history, earthquake safety, and much more. Highly recommended.

    GEL 113 - Historical Geology
This course covers the geological history of the earth and its life forms. Emphasis is placed on the study of rock strata, fossil groups, and geological time. Upon completion, students should be able to identify major fossil groups and associated rock strata and approximate ages of geological formations.
    • Course Hours Per Week: Class 3, Lab 2.
    • Semester Hours Credit: 4.
    • Prerequisite: GEL 111 or GEL 120.
    GEL 120 - Physical Geology
This course provides a study of the structure and composition of the earth's crust. Emphasis is placed on weathering, erosional and depositional processes, mountain building forces, rocks and minerals, and structural changes. Upon completion, students should be able to explain the structure, composition, and formation of the earth's crust.
    • Course Hours Per Week: Class 3, Lab 2.
    • Semester Hours Credit: 4.
    • Prerequisite: None.
    GEL 230 - Environmental Geology
This course provides insights into geologic forces that cause environmental changes influencing man’s activities. Emphasis is placed on natural hazards and disasters caused by geologic forces. Upon completion, students should be able to relate major hazards and disasters to the geologic forces responsible for their occurrence.
    • Course Hours Per Week: Class 3, Lab 2.

Paleogeography (Historical Geology) Research Image Index - Short Descriptions and 3-D Pictures The Evolution of the Colorado River (and origin of the Grand Canyon) is interrelated with the historical geology of many other locations in the southwestern U.S. Clicking on each of the following links will display a page containing a small computer generated 3-D map image of the area plus a brief description of the pertinent geologic significance. Clicking on any small image will produce a large map/picture.
    "Barbed" Tributaries:
The Marble Canyon section of the Grand Canyon has several arroyo/canyons that flow "against the grain" of the Colorado River drainage. These canyons are all less than 3 million years old, and a model for their origin/formation is given.
Black Canyon of the Gunnison River, Colorado:
The Black Canyon has the greatest depth to width ratio of any canyon in the Colorado River system. It appears to be very young, and there is an impossible contradiction in the "standard explanation" of its origin. A new model for its origin is given.
    Canyon of Lodore, Colorado:

    Historical geology
is the use of the principles of geology to reconstruct and understand the history of the earth. It focuses on geologic events that change the earth's surface and the use of stratigraphy to tell the sequence of these events. It also focuses on the evolution of plants and animals during different time periods in the Geologic timescale Nicolaus Steno (also known as Niels Stensen) was the first to observe and propose some of the basic concepts of historical geology. One of these concept was that fossils originally came from living organisms. The other, more famous, observations are often grouped together to form the Laws of Stratigraphy. James Hutton also contributed to early understanding of the earth's history with his observations at Edinburgh concerning an angular unconformity in a rock face. He first proposed the theory of uniformitarianism which is a basic principle in all branches of geology. Hutton also supported the idea that the earth was very old as opposed to prevailing theory at the time which said the earth had only been around a few thousand years. Uniformitarianism describes an earth created by the same forces of sun, wind, and water which are at work today. The opposing theory, catastrophism, says that the earth was created by a series of various sorts of cataclysms or catastrophes, similar to the story told in the Bible. This theory was once thought to be invalid but, with the recent advent of extinction theories based on meteor impacts, may be making a comeback. Perhaps the truth is somewhere in between the two ideas.
