General Geology of Southeastern Washington
by Bob Carson
Whitman College is situated on the eastern Columbia Plateau, site of some of the most catastrophic events in earth history: enormous basaltic lava flows 15 million years ago and giant jökulhlaups (glacier outburst floods) 15 thousand years ago. These and related events shaped the landscape of eastern Washington, where the Earth's youngest basalt plateau was swept by the largest documented floods in geologic history.
The Columbia Plateau is a physiographic province, part of a continent with somewhat similar rocks, landforms, soils, climate, and vegetation. The rocks are mostly basalt; the landforms are chiefly caused by erosion and deposition by jökulhlaups, but also by streams and the wind; the soils are thick on loess (windblown silt) and immature to non-existent on sand, gravel, and basalt; the climate is arid (with as little as 20 cm annual precipitation); the natural vegetation is sagebrush shrubland and short-grass prairie.
The Columbia Plateau is bordered on the north and east by the Rocky Mountains, the south by the Basin and Range Province, and the west by the Cascades. The province is divided into several physiographic sections: Whitman College is in the southeastern part of the Walla Walla Plateau section, adjacent to the northwest flank of the Blue Mountains section. On the Walla Walla Plateau, two of the largest rivers in North America meet: the Snake River which originates in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and the Columbia River which starts in the Columbia Icefields of the Canadian Rockies.

The geological field work at the six Apollo sites was rigorously planned - some say too well orchestrated with no time for human thought, although this improved in the later "J" missions. The efforts behind the sites selections and scientific objectives are beyond the scope of this database. A large body of documentation exists on this subject. Several tasks were repeated at many stations, and average times are available. The first task was generally a geological description of the area, which took ~ 5 minutes, including photography. Additional tasks are discussed below. Unloading from the LM : NA Transporting by foot or MET
The few tools used on A-11 were carried by hand. The EMU had attach points for sample bags. The A-12 crew had a small rack which held their tools. This was carried by hand. On A-14, the Modularized Equipment Transporter (see misc. tools and equipment) was used to transport the tool rack (the same as on A-12) and other equipment during longer traverses. On A-12 and most later flights a clip on a cable which rolled up on a reel which was strapped to hoses on the front of the EMU was used to which several tools could be attached. This was known as a "yo-yo."

The rake was developed to obtain a greater number of small rock samples than could be obtained using the tongs (AS-17-134-20425). Note the sample bags attached to the PLSS of the crewman. Since he could not reach his own sample bags, each crewman had to place samples in the other persons sample bags. See also the rake and scoop mounted on pallet at the rear of the LRV.
This view from Apollo 12 shows the hand tool carrier and a core tube, attached to the extension handle, being emplaced into the soil (AS-12-49-7243). Numbered sample bags are held in the hand tool carrier. Additional core tubes are visible in the carrier. If it hadn't been for my abysmal lack of ability in math, I probably would've become a scientist instead of a Romantic Lit major. As to what kind of science, I never had the opportunity to discover my alter milieu - I love several fields of hard science and several of (what are considered by some) the "softer" sciences. I have now broken these links down by category. Because of the inter-disciplinary nature of so much in the sciences these days, I thought it better to list some links in more than just one category. If you think any other link(s) belong in a different category, or definitely should be in more than one, please send me e-mail. I'd also like to know if you are aware of other good Science links I have missed. Thank you.

Online Resources for Earth Scientists (ORES)
Summary: Online Resources for Earth Scientists (ORES) is a directory of WWW resources in the area of earth science, designed to meet the needs of professionals in this area. At the top of the site's main page are links for: (1) the Commonwealth Network; (2) the site creators' home pages; (3) GISnet; (4) geoscience/civil engineering job information; and (5) Mountains West, a site sponsor. Currently, the first link is non-operational; the GISnet link provides access to other sites designed by Bill Thoen, one of this site's creators. The site's main page offers a table of contents, with topics reflecting dates of completion or ongoing construction. Major topics featured are: (1) General Earth Science/Natural History resources; (2) Agriculture; (3) Biology (Plant and Wildlife); (4) Disaster and Emergency Management; (5) Employment Resources for Earth Scientists; (6) Environmental Resources; (7) Geography and GIS resources; (8) Geology Resources; (9) Geoscience Education; (10) Geoscience Information; (11) Oceanography; (12) Weather, Meteorology, and Climate; and (13) Soil Science. Selecting a topic from the table of contents then reveals its topics page, which offers links for: (1) introductory information; (2) mailing lists; (3) newsgroups; (4) hypermedia sources; (5) data sets; (6) software; (7) documents and FAQ files; (8) journals and periodicals; (9) bulletin board systems; and (10) other resource lists. Each topic reveals an alphabetical listing of WWW resources, where titles are direct links to their respective sites.

Contents of Curriculum Unit 95.05.01:
To Guide Entry
The curriculum unit that I am writing has to do with the geology of Connecticut. This includes; plate tectonics, volcanic activity, glaciation, earthquakes, mineral and fossil formation through time. Along with this, “life” in Connecticut through history will be included, and relationships between the topics discussed. This unit is intended for use in an 8th or 9th grade science classroom. It is assumed that the students will have already covered these topics in a global format. Students are fascinated with earthquake and volcanic events that happen all over the world. When these can be “brought home,” and shown to occur in Connecticut, earth science concepts become more relevant and interesting. Included within this unit is a discussion of animals that have roamed Connecticut in the past, including dinosaurs, the most popular creatures that have ever roamed our planet. Students still talk about the movie “Jurassic Park,” and when they find out about dinosaurs such as Eubrontes, their interests peaks. Also, children are fascinated by rocks and minerals. They usually end up with a collection. When rocks and fossils can be studied, tested and discussed in a classroom, students tend to learn and retain more information. In addition, when fossils such as dinosaur bones, footprints and fern imprints are held and looked at up close, they help to fuel a child’s imagination.
