The first thing you should know, though, is that even the best online course materials can't substitute for a real education. Science is maintained by people ruthlessly checking each other's work, and it's transmitted to new scientists the same way. The second thing you should know is that while teachers are making their lecture notes and other data available to the world, they are not expecting questions from the public. Their students ask plenty already. When you visit these sites, pretend that you're sneaking into their classes and don't want to be noticed. If you ever have a question, leave the professors alone and ask me instead Note to Outside Searchers Finally, many sites disappear after the semester is over, and more schools are putting course materials online all the time. So my list is not the last word. The

Field geology class examines valley glaciation features along Rock Creek, Beartooth Mountains, Montana, from a vantage point on the Bull Lake terminal morraine.
Introduction and General Information...
about the course...
Geology 454, our 6-week, 6 semester-hour Field Geology course has been taught annually since 1970. We require this course of our B.S. degree candidates, and at the same time welcome applications from geology majors at other institutions. In summer 2001 students from ten colleges and universities, nationwide, participated in Geology 454. The instructional staff typically comprises from two to three full-time faculty members and one graduate Teaching Assistant. Course registration is normally limited to no more than 25 students.

...its purpose...
The primary job of the Geology 454 faculty is to teach people how to operate as field geologists. We do a lot of instructing on the outcrop and conduct 10 separate field exercises that range from one to five days in duration. Most projects include basic geological mapping and require the completion of one or more cross-sections.
