Undergraduate Courses in Geology (GEOL)
Subject course numbers in parentheses at the end of the course description represent the course equivalent in the Texas Common Course Numbering system. 1401 Introductory Geology I (3-2)
This course covers the nature and properties of the materials which make up the earth, the distribution of these materials throughout the earth, the processes (volcanism, glaciation, stream erosion, weathering, etc.) by which these materials are formed, altered, transported and deformed, and the nature and development of the landscapes. (GEOL 1403) 1402 Introductory Geology II (3-2)
A study of the record of life forms (fauna and flora) that evolved throughout the geologic time 4.5 billion years ago up to the occurrence of man. It also covers the physical changes of the earth through 4.5 billion years of advancing and retreating seas, of deposition and of erosion of rocks, fashioned into mountain ranges the entire chronological history of how processes of physical geology have operated. (GEOL 1404) Prerequisite:  Geology 1401 2301 Lithology (3-2)
Introduction to the basic concepts of identification, classification and origins of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Laboratory exercises consist of hand specimen identification and classification of suites of all three rock classes. (GEOL 2309) Prerequisite: Geology 1401

All students majoring in Geology are required to maintain a 2.0 average for all upper-division courses taken to fulfill degree requirements. The Junior Year Writing requirement is fulfilled by GEO-SCI 307 Geologic Writing. The B.A. degree program is intended to provide a firm background in geology while allowing sufficient flexibility to pursue other areas as well. This degree is suitable for Pre-Law and Pre-Dent/Pre-Med students. Requirements include 15 credits of supporting science and mathematics, GEO-SCI 101 (or any other introductory geology course) plus GEO-SCI 131 and 201, and 21 credits of upper-division geology or physical geography courses (GEO-SCI 231 or courses numbered 300 and above) with a minimum of 15 credits in geology. Upper division courses should be selected in consultation with a geology adviser. B.S. Programs
