USU VOLCANO IS IN ERUPTION
Outline of the Geological Survey of Hokkaido
The Geological Survey of Hokkaido was established in 1950 in the Department of Commerce and Industry, Hokkaido Government, in order to develop abundant geologic resources in the vast land of Hokkaido. At first, this survey was involved in researching for minerals, coal, petroleum, all of which are necessary for reconstruction of Japan after World War II. Since then, internationnalization of mineral resource, diversification of energy utilization and more conscious of conservation of the land and the environment, have demanded wider range of geological researching. In response to such change in social circumstances and demand from society, the survey has been studying not only fuel and metal deposits, but also development and preservation of water resources, geothermal hot springs. During the researching, the survey has also been making geological maps which are basis of various researching. As the results, Hokkaido has become the remarkable area where geological mapping on a scale of 1:50,000 is the most advanced in Japan. Recently, researching for resource development and environmental problem fitting for local needs is on demand. Furthermore, researching for the development of new resources in the sea, and surveys of active faults, are of importance.

Mission of the SD Geological Survey To conduct geologic studies, hydrologic studies, and research; and to collect, correlate, preserve, interpret, and disseminate information, leading to a better understanding of the geology and hydrology of South Dakota. Special emphasis is placed on ground-water quantity and quality and other natural resources of economic value. The Survey has no regulatory authority; instead, it provides information and interpretations on natural resources and related issues, and assists agencies and individuals in making well-informed decisions.
SDGS History The South Dakota Geological Survey was established by the legislature on March 6, 1893. From 1893 to 1903, the first State Geologist, J.E. Todd, led a pioneering effort to establish the Survey as a State scientific institution, through various reconnaissance surveys of the State.

The Geographical Survey Institute is a national surveying and mapping organization of the Ministry of Land,Infrastructure and Transport, and was established in 1869. The GSI is the only national organization that conducts basic survey and mapping and instructs related organizations to clarify the conditions of land in Japan and that provides the results of surveys to help improve this land.
GSI has the following four tasks:
1. Survey administration based on the Survey Act
2. Implementation of survey works mainly comprising basic surveys
3. Research and development of survey and mapping
4. International cooperation for survey and mapping

USGS Maps
Online Edition Discover a small sample of the millions of maps produced by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in its mission to map the Nation and survey its resources. This booklet gives a brief overview of the types of maps sold and distributed by the USGS through its Earth Science Information Centers (ESIC) and also available from business partners located in most States. The USGS provides a wide variety of maps, from topographic maps showing the geographic relief and thematic maps displaying the geology and water resources of the United States, to special studies of the moon and planets. Topographic Maps Photoimage Maps Geologic Maps Hydrologic Maps ... Order Information
Topographic Maps
7.5-minute maps 15-minute maps 1:100,000-scale series County map series ... Antarctic maps Most USGS topographic maps use brown contours to show the shape and elevation of the terrain. Contour intervals vary, depending mainly on the type of terrain and the scale of the map. (Scale is the relationship between distance on the map and distance on the ground.) The maps show and name prominent natural and cultural features. Those at scales of 1:24,000 (1 inch = 2,000 feet) show an area in detail. Such detail is useful for engineering, local area planning, and recreational purposes.
