GEUS Ministry of the Environment The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland The Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland was created in 1995 by combining the previous Geological Survey of Denmark and Geological Survey of Greenland. The Geological Survey is an independent research institute that gathers, processes and disseminates geological information of significance in the administration of groundwater, oil, natural gas and various minerals in Denmark, Greenland and the Faroe Islands. The Institute makes its knowledge available to assist in carrying out administrative tasks. The Geological Survey carries out scientific tasks in relation to the legislation administered by the Ministry of the Environment, such as the Water Supply Act, the Raw Materials Act and the acts related to energy supply. The Geological Survey also carries out assignments related to environment and energy on a contractual basis for private companies, other public authorities and clients outside Denmark. About one third of the budget of the Geological Survey is provided by income from contractual assignments and by extrabudgetary research grants. Water and ice The regulation and administration of water supply in Denmark is largely based on the information and expertise of the Geological Survey. The Geological Survey monitors groundwater and drinking-water quality and the size of the available drinking-water resources. This knowledge is used to understand the processes in the groundwater so that groundwater contamination can be prevented and already contaminated groundwater can be purified.

The temperatures were determined using hydrocarbon maturation data based on our analyses of mascerals selected from well cuttings. The pressures were calculated from drill-stem tests in conjuction with other down-hole geophysical data.
