The paper will also include one or two foreign policy simulations in which students will be given the opportunity to play the roles of various U.S. decision-makers as (more or less) hypothetical crises are played out. The simulations will require some research, writing, and oral presentations. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Each student must submit one essay (length to be discussed in class) by 18 June 1993 on a topic related to the course. Topics must be submitted to Professor Taylor in the form of a research design or prospectus by 26 March 1993. The graded essay will make up 20% of the course grade. Students will also participate in one or two national security/foreign policy simulations which will require research, writing, and oral presentations. Students will be graded on the quality of their participation in the simulation(s). This grade will constitute 20% of the course grade. Each class period will consist of lecture and discussion. Students must attend each class and the quality of their participation in the discussions will make up 10% of the final grade.

Mir Teamwork Transcends Geography, Language and Culture
TEAM OF U.S. AND RUSSIAN industry and government researchers led by NASA developed, manufactured, tested and delivered the Mir Cooperative Solar Array (MCSA) in record time and under budget. This goal was accomplished despite geographical obstacles and cultural and language differences that made a project of this size and complexity that much more complex. MCSA augments Mir's power system. The power from this flight solar array extends Mir's life and supports U.S. experiments on the station as part of the Phase I International Space Station program. MCSA was launched on the Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-74) in November 1995, and it was deployed and became operational in May 1996, less than one and a half years after the project's inception in January 1994. It is generating six kilowatts of electricity on Mir This dramatic
image was taken from Atlantis after undocking from Mir near the end of the STS-79 mission.
The MCSA is seen vertically in the center of the image.

Materials needed: -Record keeping materials, such as files, record books, maps, and computers with database and/or geographic information system (GIS) software. Actual materials will vary with the types of records kept. -For tree inventories especially, specialized computer software is recommended. Notes: Record keeping systems may be simple or intricate. Tree programs with a few limited goals will require a limited number of records to evaluate their success. On the other hand, comprehensive tree programs may need to keep more detailed records, and a more extensive record management system will be needed. Comprehensive tree inventory systems, as discussed below, can provide a wealth of information about the urban forest and municipal tree care operations. However, additional records are normally required to cover aspects of the tree management program such as long-term planning, public education, ordinance enforcement, and program administration. For example, tabulations of tree-related permits, ordinance violations, and enforcement actions may be needed to assess the implementation of certain tree ordinance provisions.

“The facts ma’am just the facts” Dragnet Alliance Network Suffers Major Loss The impact of the September 11 bombing became magnified for all members of the National Geographic Society Alliance Network. Eight of the victims of American Airlines Flight 77, which crashed into the Pentagon, were travelling as part of an NGS-sponsored educational trip. Long-time and much-loved employees Ann Judge and Joe Ferguson were escorting three Washington DC middle and elementary school teachers and three of their students to the Sustainable Seas Expedition in California. Joe joined the Society in 1987 as one of the first full-time employees of the then brand-new Geography Education Program. He became the personification of the Society’s commitment to teachers for thousands of teachers nationwide. He was, in many ways, the lynchnpin of the alliance movement and was passionate in his commitment to enhancing geography education in America’s classrooms. Ann was the Director of the NGS Travel Office committed to getting anyone and anything anywhere at any time for the Society. She was a vivacious personality, upbeat, funny, and good company. Most recently, two OGA TCs, Tony Crawford and Bryan Forbes, spent two weeks with Joe and Ann in Alaska as part of the JASON Workshop. Ann and Joe will be sorely missed. If you would like to send messages to Joe’s mother, Barbara Harrell and Ann’s husband, Geoffrey James Judge, you may send them in care of the Society by addressing them to:

    Geography Isabella Bird Bishop
British world traveler Isabella Bird Bishop circled the globe three times during her extensive travels, beginning in 1872. In 1892 she became the first woman elected to the Royal Geographic Society. This European map of the world from 1649 shows a major misconception Europeans held about world geography. The map includes Terra Australis, a vast southern continent connected to the southern tip of South America and occupying most of the South Pacific Ocean. European theorists believed that a huge body of land had to exist in the southern hemisphere in order to balance the large continents found in the northern hemisphere. Expeditions in the 18th century, notably those of English explorer Captain James Cook, would prove that Terra Australis does not exist. William Blaeu/PNI Geography The science of place, i.e., the study of the surface of the earth, the location and distribution of its physical and cultural features, the aerial patterns or places that they form, and the interrelation of these features as they affect humans.
