A Internet Resources Last revised: May, 2002 This appendix provides the locations of different types of GIS resources, and explains the ways of obtaining them online. It also directs students to the Web sites of selected examples of Internet-based GIS applications so that they can acquire first-hand experience of how the rapidly advancing Internet technology is changing the ways GIS is used today. Although all the Web sites quoted in this Appendix have been tested when the information is compiled, it is expected that some of them will be changed or removed over time. New resources will also be constantly added to the Internet. Students are therefore encouraged to take advantage of the power of the search engines such as Yahoo!, Google and Alta Vista to update their knowledge base of GIS resources on the Internet from time to time. Virginia, state, United States, U.S. Political Geography
Related Category: U.S. Political Geography The most northerly of the Southern states, Virginia is roughly triangular in shape. The small section of the state that, along with Maryland and Delaware, occupies the Delmarva peninsula between Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean is separated from the main part of Virginia and is called the Eastern Shore. The coastal plain or tidewater region of E Virginia, generally flat and partly swampy, is cut by four great tidal rivers : the Potomac (forming most of the border with Maryland and beyond which also lies Washington, D.C.), the Rappahannock, the York, and the James : all of which empty into Chesapeake Bay. In the tidewater region stretch vast forests of pine and hardwood, highlighted in early spring by flowering redbud and dogwood. In the west the tidewater region rises to c.300 ft. (90 m) at the fall line (passing through Richmond) and gives way to the Piedmont : rolling, generally fertile country that broadens gradually as it extends south to the North Carolina line. Rising abruptly in the western Piedmont is the Blue Ridge range, carpeted with bluegrass and ablaze in spring with rhododendron and mountain laurel; the Blue Ridge rises to the state's highest peak, Mt. Rogers (5,720 ft/1,743 m). Between the Blue Ridge and the Allegheny Plateau, both part of the Appalachian range, lies the valley and ridge province. One of the most prominent of these valleys is the Valley of Virginia; another is the rich and historic Shenandoah Valley.

Near the end of the semester students design unique projects in which they rate 22,000 towns and cities in the U.S. on the basis of their own criteria. They end up with their own determiniation of which is the best place to visit, best place to live, or best place to avoid, etc. The project swings into action many of the fundamental skills learned earlier in the term.
Research with GIS has been taught Spring terms in the Department of Geography What is A Geographic Information System? A GIS program integrates the fields of cartography and data analysis. A map is made up of many points, line segments, and area polygons. Each of these objects is assiciated in a GIS to a row of a common spreadsheet. The program stores the data as other spreadsheets, such as Excel, would do. But it also keeps track of where the information is in relation to other objects on the map. In other words it knows that a point representing a school, for example, is within a polygon representing a planning district. The district adjacent to that one is also known, and the distance between the school and the nearest highway is known as well. You can see that once information from many sources are introduced to the project, interesting possibilities emerge. A GIS can tell us how many Asian households are within 5 road miles of a grocery store. It can design efficient routes for waste haulers. It can identify areas which are most vulnerable to urban sprawl. Or it can help identify where the new fire station or coffee shop should be built.
