Earth View gives you a beautiful view of the Earth from above, showing day and night, at your choice of time and date, and centering on any latitude and longitude. If you play with this a little, you can get a very good idea of the patterns of day and night over the Earth at different seasons. For more options, see the main page of this great web site: Earth and Moon Viewer Here Comes the Sun is a good tutorial about earth-sun relations and seasons, with clear diagrams and animations. Guide to Arctic Sunrise and Sunset lets you see where the sun is shining (or not) at three different locations in the Arctic for your chosen month. Good for visualizing how the seasons work at high latitudes. Also, you can get a calendar (printable) of sunrise and sunset times for many locations in the world at Custom Sunrise Sunset Calendar Here is a good page on How to Read the Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Grid , from the U.S. National Park Service.

National Geography Education Standards
ISS EarthKAM addresses many geography standards as presented in Geography for Life, National Geography Education Standards, Geography Education Standards Project, National Geographic Research and Exploration, Washington, D.C., 1994.
The World in Spatial Terms
Standard 1: How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technology to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective.
  • The characteristics, functions, and applications of maps, globes, aerial and other photographs, satellite-produced images, and models.
  • How to make and use maps, globes, graphs, charts, models, and databases to analyze spatial distributions and patterns.
  • The relative advantages and disadvantages of using maps, globes, aerial and other photographs, satellite-produced images, and models to solve geographic problems. Standard 2: How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places and environments in a spatial context.
  • The distribution of major physical and human features at different scales (local to global).

    Geography
Pacific Worlds Education Standards-Based Education "Geography is more than memorizing states and their capitals. Geographic understandings require that students learn the skills and inquiry methods of geographers to observe patterns, associations, relationships, and spatial order. Geography must be learned within the contexts of home, school, community, society, and the work world." Below are listed the content standards as laid out for Hawai‘i Schools (Source: "Social Studies Content Standards"). At the end of each section are identified some tools or ideas for using Pacific Worlds to address these Standards. Use these ideas to apply to the specific standards listed for each category and each grade level. Content Standards, Geography:

Students use geographic representations to organize, analyze, and present information on people, places, and environments. Grades 4 - 5: Grades 6 - 8: Grades 9 - 12: Addressing these Standards: Geographic representation : Mapping is the predominant form of "Geographic representation." Using the lessons in the Teacher Guide, have students produce maps of their ahupua‘a based on Hawaiian place names, environmental zone names, and types of traditional land uses. Use these maps to talk about why different human activities are located where they are, within that ahupua‘a, and where past land uses would have been located.

    Geography for Life
Geography for Life: The Geography National Standards 1994 present what each American student should know and be able to do in geography by grades 4, 8, and 12. The eighteen standards are organized under six "essential elements." They represent the essentials and fundamental ideas of geography.
The outcome of Geography for Life is a geographically informed person who sees meaning in the arrangement of things across the Earth's surface; who appreciates the relationships between people, places, and environments; who uses geographic skills; and who applies geographic perspectives to life situations.
    The World in Spatial Terms
Geography studies the relationships between people, places and environments by mapping information about them into a spatial context. The geographically informed person knows and understands: 1. How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information.
    2. How to use mental maps (a person's internalized picture of a part of Earth's surface) to organize information about people places, and environments.
    3. How to analyze the spatial organization of people places, and environments on Earth's surface.

"Geography for Life: National Geography Standards 1994" is a major contribution to social studies and geographical education. It specifies what students in American schools should learn and be able to do with regard to geography. There are six essential elements of geography into which 18 standards are grouped. ELEMENT 1: THE WORLD IN SPATIAL TERMS Maps, photographs, and satellite images are principal tools for investigating the relationships between people, places, and environments. When information is shown using those tools, it is in a spatial context. The spatial context for geography is the Earth. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 1) How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective. (Standard 2) How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context. (Standard 3) How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places, and environments on Earth's surface. ELEMENT 2: PLACES AND REGIONS People are attached to particular places and regions. Regions and places have been given meaning by people, and in turn those places and regions help people to organize and understand the complex world. The geographically informed person knows and understands: (Standard 4) The physical and human characteristics of places. (Standard 5) That people create regions to interpret Earth's complexity. (Standard 6) How culture and experience influence people's perceptions of places and regions.

    BE A GEOGRAPHY DETECTIVE
Overview: At first glance, a landscape can be beautiful, boring, colourful, disturbing. Using the skills of a geography detective, however, students can learn more about the land and the relationships humans have with it. Students will apply the six ·essential elements· of geography (location, places and regions, physical systems, human systems, environment and society, and uses of geography) as they make in-depth observations and draw conclusions about historical landscapes. They will demonstrate understanding by writing journal entries, sketching landscapes, and making mental maps. Time: One to two hours Materials Required:
    • Internet access
    • Overhead projector
    • Personal journals
    • Prepared transparency of a landscape photograph
    Objectives: Students will:
    • Identify and discuss the six essential elements of geography
    • Use the six essential elements to interpret a landscape
    • Incorporate their findings into a journal entry, including a description, sketch, and mental map

THE NGS GEOGRAPHY STANDARDS: A SUMMARY
In October 1994, the US national geography standards were published as a NGS book called Geography for Life. They address how physical and human phenomena are spatially distributed over Earth's surface. They are designed to help you prepare students to be geographically informed-to see meaning in the arrangement of things in space; to see relations between people, places, and environments; to use geographic skills; and to apply spatial and ecological perspectives to life situations. The six essential elements and the 18 standards contained within them follow. In late 2000, The CCGE released the Canadian equivalent to the NGS document which can be found on the CCGE website
