Syllabus Systems approach to the physical environment, including landform, soil, vegetation, and animal elements, from a human ecological perspective. Earth's Physical Systems aims to provide students with an understanding of Earth's physical environments. The course focuses on five main themes:
  • characteristics and global patterns of solid-earth, surface-relief, and living-organism environmental systems (scale),
  • the linkages and interconnections among these environmental systems (complexity),
  • the dynamic nature of Earth's physical environment (change over time),
  • the influence of human activities on environmental processes (human intervention), and
  • the role that scientific research and technology can play in understanding environmental processes and in solving environmental problems (human responsibility).
    • solid-earth environment: volcanoes, earthquakes, surface-relief formation
    • surface-relief environment: soil processes and soil erosion, landslides, surface water and groundwater, river dynamics and floods, glacial processes and environmental change, wind erosion, coastal environments

A $7 lab and field trip fee is required and will be collected the first week of class. This course will sensitize you to how the global environment operates at mega and mesoscales, and the role of Homo sapiens within it. Grading: Total points (200 possible) Lecture Midterm Final Lab Exercises/Participation Quizzes Examinations in lecture will consist of multiple choice, true-false, and possibly matching. Diagrams and line sketches may be integrated in test questions and the exams are machine graded. If your final exam is higher than your midterm, the latter is dropped and your final exam grade counts as 50% of course grade.

    Why This Goal Is Important:
The need for geographic literacy has never been greater or more obvious than in today's tightly interrelated world. Students must understand the world's physical features, how they blend with social systems and how they affect economies, politics and human interaction. Isolated geographic facts are not enough. To grasp geography and its effect on individuals and societies, students must know the broad concepts of spatial patterns, mapping, population and physical systems (land, air, water). The combination of geographic facts and broad concepts provides a deeper understanding of geography and its effects on individuals and societies. As a result of their schooling students will be able to: Learning Standards Early Elementary Late Elementary Middle/Junior High School Early High School Late High School A.

Alaska Standards and Key Elements for Geography The Alaska Geography Standards were modeled after the national geography standards, Geography for Life (1994). The state and national standards share a common vision, as expressed in the Geography Education Standards Projectís publication:
The . . . Standards aim to create a geographically informed person: someone who understands that geography is the study of people, places, and environments from a spatial perspective, someone who appreciates the interdependent worlds in which we all live. The study of geography has practical value through the application of a spatial view to life situations ( Geography for Life: National Geography Standards
Alaska teachers and administrators will find the above-noted publication invaluable in describing the standards, age-appropriate activities, and indicators of mastery at the elementary, junior high, and senior high levels.
The Alaska Geography Standards also derive from the five themes of geography which have focused classroom inquiry since the publication of Guidelines for Geographic Education: K-12 (1984). The themes ñlocation, place, human/environmental interactions, movement, and region ñremain central to the Alaska Standards, though reorganized under six standards.

    NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY STANDARDS
Excerpts from Geography for Life Physical and human phenomena are spatially distributed over the Earth's surface. The goal of the national standards is a geographically informed person (1) who sees meaning in the arrangement of things in space; (2) who sees relations between people, place, and environments; (3) who uses geographic skills; and (4) who applies spatial and ecological perspectives to life situations. The World in Spatial Terms
Geography studies the relationships between people, places, and environments by mapping information about them into a spatial context. The geographically informed person knows and understands: How to use maps and other geographic representations, tools, and technologies to acquire, process, and report information from a spatial perspective
How to use mental maps to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context.
How to analyze the spatial organization of people, places and environments on the Earth's surface Places and Regions
The identities and lives of individuals and peoples are rooted in particular places and the human constructs called regions.

physical geography is the study of natural systems and cycles that interact within the Earth s life layer where land and oceans meet the atmosphere.
    http://geography.bu.edu/GEOG/focus/physical.html
Students who concentrate in geography receive basic training in a core group of courses followed by a choice of course sequences focusing on the several of geography. The core courses build a foundation in traditional branches of the discipline, quantitative techniques, and remote sensing/geographic information systems (GIS) skills. Special emphasis in the department lies in four subfields within the discipline: (1) energy-environmental systems and resource analysis; (2) geography of development; (3) remote sensing and geographic information system; and (4) biogeography and climatology
    Physical Geography
Physical geography is the study of natural systems and cycles that interact within the Earth's life layer where land and oceans meet the atmosphere. The concentration in physical geography has been structured to provide exposure to the broad spectrum of geographic research in the natural sciences. At the same time it allows the student to concentrate in one of four topical areas: 1) landforms, soils, and vegetation, 2) hydrology, 3) climate, and 4) methods, including remote sensing and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). It also includes courses in methematics physics, biology, and earth science to provide a well-rounded and rigorous program of science education. (Please see program requirements described below.)
