Lawton - Ft Sill Chamber
Lawton - Ft Sill.... An overview of the Lawton-Ft. Sill Community
Lawton was founded on August 6, 1901, when the Kiowa-Comanche reservation was opened for white settlement. A lottery was used to distribute the land, meaning a person wanting a claim-which was 160 acres in the new section-had to register for a drawing. The town site was selected by federal authorities and located on a section of prairie south of Fort Sill, which had been in existence since the 1860's. General Henry W. Lawton is the town's namesake. Today, Lawton is the third largest city in the state. Lawton serves as the prominent shopping, medical, recreational, educational and religious center for the region. It is the retail and distribution center for the area's cattle, dairy and agricultural industries. In addition, Lawton is the home of manufacturing and processing companies and is continually working toward expansion of existing industries and acquisition of new ones. Fort Sill was founded in 1869 by Major Philip Sheridan. At the beginning of the twentieth century, it seemed that the post would be abandoned following the demise of other U.S. Army installations in Oklahoma. However, American leaders decided in 1911 to utilize the post as an artillery training facility. Since that time, it has remained an artillery center. Present day troop strength is approximately 18,830 with civilian employees numbering about 7,500. Annual military and civilian payroll totals more than $171 million.

Geography at Carthage
The study of geography enriches the knowledge and career opportunities of those majoring in other disciplines and prepares geography majors for a wide variety of career opportunities in business, government and education. At Carthage, geography is a modern applied science that retains its ancient, traditional role as a liberal art. The department continues this tradition by preparing students for productive and rewarding careers while instilling the thought processes, qualities, and habits which are the hallmarks of a liberally educated person. The career opportunities for geography majors are highly varied and growing as the field becomes more widely recognized by persons outside the discipline. The diversity of opportunity is, in part, revealed by the course offerings listed. Because of this breadth of opportunity, geography students' choices of elective courses outside the major are often as important as their choices within the major. Students majoring in geography are urged to achieve competency in mathematics, statistics and/or computer science. The desired level of competency within these disciplines varies with each student's career goals. Prospective geography students are urged to discuss career goals and opportunities with department faculty and to consult Geography as a Professional Field published by the

http://www.augustana.edu/academ/geography/
Geographers study the locations and interrelations of natural and/or cultural features. They emphasize through their research and teaching the physical-human unity, which gives character to places. Geographers try to develop in themselves and in others a "geographical imagination," an appreciation of and sensitivity to the role played by space and place in our understanding of the world which is our habitat. Geographers ask such fundamental questions as; Where are things found? Why there? Are these good locations or distributions? Would there be better locations or distributions? Their interests focus on such themes as:
  • Relationships between humans and the natural environment, Spatial relationships of natural or cultural features, Natural processes involving landforms, water, soil, weather, and climate, Cultural landscapes or "built" environments as they are and as they might be developed through urban and regional planning.

Because the original intent of the Series' sponsor was to focus primarily on lesser known areas of the world or regions in which U.S. forces might be deployed, the series is not all-inclusive. At present, 102 countries and regions are covered. Notable omissions include Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom, and other Western nations, as well as a number of African nations. About the Country Studies/Area Handbooks Program
