Geography is the study of the earth's surface. It helps us to know and understand the planet on which we live. Geographers are interested in the earth's physical features as well as the distribution of plants, animals and humans. Geographers use techniques such as observation, surveying, analysis and mapping. They study and describe many details: natural structures such as mountains; human structures such as cities; natural divisions such as oceans; political divisions such as counties; human activities. And they learn how all of these things relate to one another. We have designed this interactive, multimedia program to be an introduction to the Geography of Ohio. No single source, however, will tell you everything that you might want to know about Ohio's geography, and this program is no exception. Therefore, you may want to consult some other sources after using this program. This is especially true if you are writing a paper or report, or if you are preparing for a talk. The web links and books listed below have been used extensively in preparing this program. If you want to look further into the wonderful world of geography, you will find a great deal of useful data and information in these resources.

THE DIALECTICAL SOCIAL GEOGRAPHY OF ELISEE RECLUS
    John P. Clark
(Illustration of Reclus by Cotard, pers. coll.) This is unfortunate, since his ideas are even more relevant today than they were in his own day, when he was widely known as the foremost geographer of France, and feared by many as a dangerous political radical. Indeed, a careful study of his thought shows him to be not only a pioneering figure in social geography, but also an ecological social theorist who long ago explored areas that have become central concerns of ecophilosophy and environmental ethics today. Perhaps most notably, Reclus is found to be an important precursor of social ecology, which is widely considered to be one of the three major tendencies in contemporary radical ecological theory. This essay will focus on one important aspect of his impressive body of thought: his holistic, dialectical interpretation of the place of humanity in the natural world. First, however, a brief discussion of Reclus' place in the political and intellectual life of his time may be helpful in putting his ideas in historical context. Geography, one of the four science disciplines in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is responsible for building, maintaining, and applying The National Map . USGS Geography ( formerly Mapping ) provides scientific information to describe and interpret America's landscape by mapping the terrain, monitoring changes over time, and analyzing how and why these changes have occurred. The knowledge gained through these activities is used to model the processes of change and to predict future changes.
The National Map is a consistent framework for geographic knowledge needed by the Nation. It provides public access to high-quality, geospatial data and information from multiple partners to help support decisionmaking by resource managers and the public. The National Map is the product of a consortium of Federal, State, and local partners who provide geospatial data to enhance America's ability to access, integrate, and apply geospatial data at global, national, and local scales.
