Spike Hampson, 585-5698. Director of DIGIT Lab. B. Biediger, 581-3612 or 585-9133. Geographers begin with the proposition that place matters. They are concerned with the ways that place and spatial variation influence action, interactions and processes. Human geographers study the causes and processes associated with the spatial distributions of human activities (e.g. population migration, urbanization, and economic interactions). Physical geographers study processes within the physical environment (e.g. climate change, the shaping of landscapes, and biological interactions with the landscape). Geographers use a variety of tools to gather, analyze and represent geographic information: cartography, geographic information systems, aerial photography, satellite imagery, statistics, and mathematical models. Graduates with a B.A. or B.S. degree from the Geography Department may find positions with state or federal agencies, private businesses, or (with proper certification) in teaching.

The course offers explanations of the spatial distribution of productive, societal and environmental phenomena and the consequences of change for economic, social and environmental welfare. It also explores the nature of diversity and inequality in the market and social housing sectors, systems of housing provision, patterns of housing use and the ideas of 'community' and 'regeneration' in housing debates and on the housing policy agenda. The curriculum is phased to provide a programme of introductory studies in a range of contributory subjects at Level 4; development of specific knowledge at Level 5; and critical understandings and skills of synthesis and prescription at Level 6.

Hail
Hail is a destructive form of precipitation that is 5 to 190 millimeters in diameter. The large downdrafts in mature thunderstorm clouds provide the mechanism for hail formation. Hailstones normally have concentric shells of ice alternating between those with a milky appearance and those that are clear. The milky white shells, containing bubbles and partially melted snowflakes, correspond to a period of rapid freezing, while the clear shells develop as the liquid water freezes much more slowly.
Hair Hygrometer
Hygrometer that uses the expansion and contraction of hair to determine atmospheric humidity

It demonstrates how many aspects of human life - economic, political, social and cultural are closely linked to places and the differences between these places. Human Geographers have always been interested in a wide range of issues and the last ten years have seen exciting new approaches to the subject. The academic staff provide teaching and research expertise across a wide variety of different themes and geographical areas. The Human Geography degree can be combined with any of almost thirty other subjects. It assumes no previous specialist knowledge in Human Geography, and the modules in the first year combine to provide a broad foundation before proceeding to the second and third years of study when you will specialise in aspects of Human Geography.
