2003, Spring Semester Room 203 Nolte Center West. Problems in Historiography and Representation of the Holocaust:
3 credit course
Instructor: Dr. Stephen Feinstein, Director, Center for Holocaust Studies
Course Objectives:

Thus, the course will begin with discussion of problems of semantics, "Holocaust," versus "Shoah," and Genocide, issues of uniqueness, the problem of inclusion of other groups affected by the Nazi era such as the Roma and Sinti peoples, homosexuals, Poles and religious dissidents, then move to individualized and more complex issues relating to the specificity of German culpability, gender-related questions, examination of individual theological responses in depth, the second generation, as well as issues relating to probing limits of representation in art and literature. If we would have more time, we might go into the question of comparative genocidebut that is probably better left for another course.
Aim of the Course: Aim of the course is to produce professional learning experience in the area of Holocaust studies, with understanding of historiographical discourse, reading of individual works, and writing assignments. The Holocaust should always be viewed in the context of the civilization in which it took place: European, Christian, scientific, modern, technological, and progressive.

CULTURAL IDENTITY AS A CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHT IN SOUTH AFRICA
Johan D. van der Vyver
I.T. Cohen Professor of International Law and Human Rights
Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A.
The South African Constitution contains a solemn decree in its Bill of Rights sanctioning the right of certain sections of the community to maintain their cultural heritage, to practice their religion and to use their language. It provides: Persons belonging to a cultural, religious or linguistic community may not be denied the right, with other members of their community, to
enjoy their culture, practice their religion and use their language; and
form, join and maintain cultural, religious and linguistic associations and other organs of civil society.
This right may not be exercised in a manner inconsistent with any other provision of the Bill of Rights.
The Constitution furthermore affords to everyone the right to use the language and to participate in the cultural life of their choice, provided they do so in a manner that is not inconsistent with any of the provisions of the Bill of Rights. A non-discrimination clause in the Constitution prohibits unfair discrimination by the State

ATMs vital to freedom
English to Spanish English to Portuguese English to Korean English to Japanese English to Italian English to French English to Chinese
by Mike Lee, ATMIA Intl. Director 12 September 2001 Survivors trapped in the rubble of the collapsed World Trade Center have called out on their cell phones to be rescued. People trapped in the inferno of the WTC before it collapsed and passengers on the hijacked jetliners used their phones, poignantly, to say goodbye to their loved ones. America and the civilized world are in grief. Some say the world will never be the same again. Perhaps the nature of freedom has changed and, with it, the future shape of peace in the world. Distraught and devastated New Yorkers queued at ATMs to draw money in a city trying to survive the biggest act of terrorism ever inflicted on United States soil. A fear drove them to the cash machines, a fear that there would be shortages - shortages of fuel, shortages of cash, along with the terrible shortage of blood. If only people will donate more blood. If only the airlines can be re-opened with enhanced security levels. If only the streets, roads and bridges can go back to carrying people and vehicles freely and safely to their destinations. If only there will be sufficient fuel for all our requirements. If only we can keep a supply line to our cash through the ATMs, to buy the supplies we need.

On February 26, 1992, the newly independent state of Slovenia deleted the names of some 30,000 residents from the nation's civil registries. The targeted population, which came to be known as izbrisani (erased residents) were not of Slovenian ancestry, but were so-called 'new minorities" including ethnic Serbs, ethnic Croats and ethnic Bosnian Muslims, ethnic Albanian Kosovars and ethnic Roma which the government sought to force out of the country. (In contrast 'old minorities' include ethnic Italians and ethnic Hungarians, specifically mentioned in the December 1991 Constitution.)

Iraq: more than a federation It appears that the governing council in Iraq has opted to created a lopsided federation. They have approved a plan for a single, autonomous region for the Kurds as part of an Iraqi federation. Such a province would not likely dominate Iraq, but would problematize the economic recovery of Iraq because control of the oilfields of Kirkuk would fall directly under the control of an autonomous government.

Bush courts UN: "I still won't respect you tomorrow!" According to the Washington Post, Bush wants UN to increase presence in Iraq, but won't turn over any authority. This is perhaps old hat by now. But the true comedy is that the administration's diplomats may be avoiding Annan and the UN:
Despite Annan's gesture, the United States on Thursday canceled plans to send a high-level delegation to Friday's talks.
We're gonna be in Iraq a really long time.

What is now northern Sudan was in ancient times the kingdom of Nubia, which came under Egyptian rule after 2600 B.C. An Egyptian and Nubian civilization called Kush flourished until A.D. 350. Missionaries converted the region to Christianity in the 6th century, but an influx of Muslim Arabs, who had already conquered Egypt, eventually controlled the area and replaced Christianity with Islam. During the 1500s a people called the Funj conquered much of Sudan, and several other black African groups settled in the south, including the Dinka, Shilluk, Nuer, and Azande. Egyptians again conquered the Sudan in 1874, and after Britain occupied Egypt in 1882, it took over Sudan in 1898, ruling the country in conjunction with Egypt. It was known as the Anglo-Egyptian Sudan between 1898 and 1955. On Aug. 20, 1998, the United States launched cruise missiles that destroyed a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Khartoum that allegedly manufactured chemical weapons. Sudan has close ties with Iraq, which has thwarted the UN inspections of its weapons stockpiles that are thought to include biological weapons. The U.S. contended that the wealthy Arab, Osama Bin Laden, financed the Sudanese factory. Since 1999 international attention has been focused on evidence that slavery is widespread throughout Sudan. Arab raiders from the north of the country have enslaved thousands of southerners, who are black. The Dinka people have been the hardest hit. Some sources point out that the raids intensified in the 1980s along with the civil war between north and south. Since the early 1990s, several international human rights organizations have engaged in the controversial practice of buying back slaves from the traders. Some contend this may inadvertently encourage slavery since slave redemption has become profitable. The antislavery organizations counter that in the absence of a political solution, buying back slaves is the only hope for thousands of Sudanese.
