General Genetics
Overview
Plant life, growth and development, is genetically determined but also greatly influenced by the environment. The rather inefficient exploitation of the genetic potential (in average to only about 20-30% in crop plants) is attributed to environmental stresses. On the other hand plants have the capacity to survive extreme abiotic stress conditions. Owing to their sessile lifestyle it is of utmost importance that plants integrate diverse signals from the environment and respond by the induction of protective mechanisms. The focus in the General Genetics unit is on basic research of functional genetics investigating the environmental influences on plant growth and development. Model systems such as Arabidopsis thaliana Nicotiana tabacum , and Zea mays are studied by genetic and reverse genetic approaches. Major areas of study are: the relation between gene function and phenotype, molecular mechanisms of regulation of gene expression, signal perception and transfer. Part of this work has strategic aspects important for agriculture and plant biotechnology The environmental aspects of research are linked to the heat shock response. Crucial to the perception of stress and the initiation of a response are heat shock transcription factors (HSF) whose complexity in plants is amazingly high. Their functional roles appear to be very diverse and are not yet understood. HSF-dependently expressed genes encode heat shock proteins and, as has been recently detected, novel targets including genes involved in oxidative stress, cold stress and other abiotic stress responses. The long-term goals are directed towards the understanding of the mole-cular mechanisms of common stress tolerance.

The Advent of a Molecular Genetics of General Intelligence Published in: Intelligence 20 (1995) 115-124 (Editorial), see also the postscripts (2001 and 2003) Volkmar Weiss The approach of the IQ Quantitative Trait Loci Project by Plomin et al. (1994) is criticized. Raw scores of IQ test do not exhibit the bell curve, only the normalized scores. Even a bellshaped distribution does not need a large number of underlying genes. Family data are in agreement with Mendelian segregation at a major gene locus of IQ, responsible for the regulation of brain energy metabolism. Therefore, the background of the correlation between glutathione peroxidase activity and IQ should be disentangled, applying methods of molecular genetics. In 1980 Jensen was of the opinion: "The genotype is itself a theoretical construct. No one can look at a genotype for intelligence under a microscope or isolate it in a test tube" (p. 183). The rapid progress of molecular genetics during the last years has made it possible that the first research report on the molecular genetics of IQ has been published in 1994 by Plomin et al.. This editorial will criticize the approach taken, but with the only aim to make progress in this area of research even more rapid and more straightforward. Since an exhaustive critique of the very popular myth of the bell curve and its underlying genetics has already been published (Weiss, 1992a), we will restrict ourselves here to the most pertinent points. THE MYTH OF THE BELL CURVE

Author details Abstract
  • GPs are involved in long term care of patients and families with complex conditions. They juggle the need for medical expertise, the relationships between family members, the cost of expertise, limitations of access, and the medicolegal environment. With this background, the GP is ideally placed to play an active role in the "new genetics". GP consultations involving the new genetics will include diagnostic testing for patients with clinical problems, preconception and prenatal testing for couples in relation to pregnancy, predictive testing for families with some genetic conditions, and community genetic screening in some circumstances. GPs will need to understand the language of the new genetics, undergo continuing education, and receive ongoing support to enable them to communicate effectively with patients and their families. Different models of care incorporating GPs, specialists and allied health professionals can be developed to provide maximum delivery of relevant genetic data for both genetic and common multifactorial disorders.
