AN INTRODUCTION TO GENETICS
The following article has been provided by the above author. All copy rights are held by the author and any reproduction of this material in whole or in part must have the authors approval. Faced with the scientific facts of modern veterinary medicine, many of us are caught between a fascination of the subject matter and a layman's exasperation over its complexities. Nowhere is this more true than in the average breeder's struggles with genetics, but it has become more important than ever that we make the effort to understand at least the basics. This will enable us to follow the research now taking place in the field of inherited health problems. Great strides have already been made in the detection and treatment of genetic faults in humans, providing a fund of information that is aiding directly in the research for dogs. Genetic Research Coalition Formed
The possibilities are breath-taking, both for treatment and prevention, but all this will not take place in the immediate future. The molecular genetic research Dr. Brewer is directing is initially scheduled as a five year project. It may take longer and it may cost more than the estimated $750,000 the three sponsors have pledged to fund. In the meantime, the more we learn about the fundamentals of how characteristics are passed from one generation to another, the better we will be able to use the information when it is offered to us Traits Established

Affymetrix protocols at NASC NASCArrays is a repository for microarray data generated by Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Centre's transcriptomics service. NASC operates an Affymetrix 'GeneChip' (microarray) service for the Arabidopsis thaliana community. All data produced by the service are publicly available. The data are accessible through text searching and a series of data mining tools. All data are annotated with sample preparation details, and the original Affymetrix data are available for download. Made available on the Web by the Nottingham Arabidopsis Stock Centre, Division of Plant Sciences, University of Nottingham Oligonucleotide Array Sequence Analysis Gene Expression Profiling Databases, Genetic Database [Publication Type] ... Arabidopsis genome initiative The home page of the Arabidopsis Genome Initiative (AGI), a collaborative project between the Carnegie Institution of Washington Department of Plant Biology and the National Center for Genome Resources, which aims to sequence the complete Arabidopsis genome. This project succeeds the Arabidopsis thaliana Database Project (AtDB) and is known as The Arabidopsis Information Resource (TAIR). This site provides information about TAIR, Arabidopsis, and also the old Arabidopsis databases (AtDB, AAtDB). There are links to information on sequencing progress, as well as sequence analysis tools, genetic and physical maps, and plant gene nomenclature. This site is aimed at researchers and TAIR is funded by the National Science Foundation.

The annual Stickler conference is in Chicago this year, July 10th and 11th. You can find info about the conference at www.sticklers.org . I would encourage families to attend if possible. I have been to several and they are wonderful. We are going to have a mini PRS conference on that Friday, July 9 at the Doubletree (as far as I know now). I would like to have anyone who can attend please email me, nancy@pierrerobin.org so I can make plans. I am going to try to get a meeting room for that afternoon. Our get together won't be a formal meeting, just a time to meet each other. I have talked to so many families over the past 9 years, I am anxious to meet some face to face. Please let me know if you will be coming and how many people in your party. You do have to register for the Stickler conference, you can find all that info on their website. Pierre Robin Network was formed in May of 1999 by the mother of a son with PRS. Our organization is made up of parents, relatives, caregivers, adults with PRS and professionals who have an interest in PRS.
