Medic's guide to the WWW It is not an easy time to be a Medical student! Research into clinical genetics is motoring at a phenomenal rate with ideas, concepts and treatments seeming to change every day. Additionally, courtesy of the internet, patients are more informed than ever before and will come to your surgery armed with print outs seeking an informed opinion. How do you keep up? One approach is not to rely on your knowledge but rather know where to get the information. For this purpose, please find a list of useful websites. I suggest you have a spend some time getting to know these sites and how they can help you. A word of warning - just because its on the 'net doesn't mean its true - always check the authorship and the date of printing! Many sites are funded by pharmaceutical companies - are they trying to plug their treatment Genomics (genes and medicine) http://www.nlm.nih.gov/

Clinical Genetics
A Short Course
Golder N. Wilson

Univ. of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas Paper March 2000 500 pp. Description Genetics is the study of inheritable traits. There are now tests available for dozens of inheritable conditions. Health care professionals must have an understanding of genetics in order to meet the needs of patients who seek genetic testing. This book covers all aspects of genetics from basic and laboratory genetics to genetics in obstetrics and pediatrics. Preface This book provides an overview of clinical genetics by using case presentations and patient-oriented problems to illustrate important genetic principles. The first 10 chapters are drawn from traditional medical genetic coverage as presented in our genetics course to first-year medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. The last six chapters are more unique among medical genetic texts and emphasize genetic diagnosis and management in the areas of pediatrics (Chapters 11,12), surgery (Chapter 13), medicine (Chapter 14), obstetrics (Chapter 15), and allied health (Chapter 16). The first two parts of the book should therefore be useful for first or second-year medical genetics courses, with the last section useful for subsequent clinical clerkships and medical practice. The clinical emphasis and broad approach should also be useful for nurses, therapists, social workers, and counselors who frequently encounter patients with genetic disorders.

Genetics Program About Us Students People Research ... Faculty Your Location: CAS Home / Genetics Program The College of Agricultural Sciences administers the University program in genetics leading to Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. The Genetics Program faculty is drawn from qualified geneticists throughout the University, and the curriculum is tailored to provide students with an integrated program leading to a graduate degree in genetics. It is also possible to enroll in graduate programs in departments of the colleges of Science, Agricultural Sciences, and Forestry and receive a minor in genetics. It is expected that a student enrolling in the Genetics Program will have completed one year of physics and biology, two years of chemistry, an introductory genetics course, and mathematics through calculus. For the MS and Ph.D. degrees in genetics, students take the core genetics courses, biochemistry (equivalent to BB 550, BB 551), statistics, and graduate-level genetics courses chosen from the list prepared by the genetics faculty. Students participate in research designed to prepare them for careers in genetics. The director of the Genetics Program is Walt Ream, Ph.D. If you are interested in applying to the Genetics Program, check out the Admissions website
