    CAN WE AFFORD TO IGNORE GENETIC ENGINEERING?
    by Siobhan Mitchell
    Article first published in 'Permaculture Magazine' No.17. Genetic engineering is now a fact of life and its consequences are at large in our society. In this passionately argued article, Siobhan Mitchell explains why this subject is too important to be ignored...
    The patent number for umbilical cord blood cells.
    Photo: Rebecca Price, Women's Environmental Network. Genetic Engineering is now a part of all our lives whether we like it or not - and surveys show we don't. It offers new assaults on old issues of protest, from human rights abuses (particularly those of indigenous peoples) to animal welfare, and environmental issues such as biodiversity. Its impact on our health is as yet unknown. There are also many parallels with the nuclear age - huge investment (this time by companies rather than governments); experiments cloaked in secrecy through jargon, and protected by patents rather than the Official Secrets Act; information held by the very few; and the blithely comforting assurances of safety by governments around the world. EDUCATIONAL MATERIAL... FOR CHILDREN

    Grains of delusion: Golden rice seen from the ground February 2001 INTRODUCTION The biotech lobby is selling the idea that genetically engineered (GE) crops, starting with golden rice, will solve problems of malnutrition. This is an ambitious goal for a small grain of rice. The malnutrition agenda is drawing in support from every major agricultural biotech company, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the US Agency for International Development (USAID), and its main funder, the Rockefeller Foundation. But at the end of the day, the main agenda for golden rice is not malnutrition but garnering greater support and acceptance for genetic engineering amongst the public, the scientific community and funding agencies

    July 1995 FISHING OUT AQUATIC DIVERSITY Anna-Rosa Martnez i Prat, GRAIN The industrialisation of fishing and the global market are putting ever-growing pressure on marine ecosystems and the diversity they contain. Overfishing, the introduction of new species, re-stocking and aquacultural development very seriously affect diversity in continental waters. Both at sea and inland, small-scale fishing communities and the poor are paying the price for the scarcity of resources. In this article, biologist Anna-Rosa Martnez, a GRAIN staff member, reviews the problem of overfishing and the current approach to aquatic living resources management. Overfishing, an indisputable reality

    Description
    The Journal provides a medium for the rapid publication of both full-length articles and short communications on all aspects of biotechnology. The Journal will accept papers ranging from genetic or molecular biological positions to those covering biochemical, chemical or bioprocess engineering aspects as well as computer application of new software concepts, provided that in each case the material is directly relevant to biotechnological systems. Papers presenting information of a multidisciplinary nature that would not be suitable for publication in a journal devoted to a single discipline, are particularly welcome. The following areas are covered in the Journal:
    * Nucleic Acids/Molecular Biology
