Hazards of Genetically Engineered Foods and Crops:
Why We Need A Global Moratorium
Ronnie Cummins
Little Marais, Minnesota
Introductory overview The technology of genetic engineering (GE), wielded by transnational "life science" corporations such as Monsanto and Novartis, is the practice of altering or disrupting the genetic blueprints of living organisms plants, animals, humans, microorganisms patenting them, and then selling the resulting gene-foods, seeds, or other products for profit. Life science corporations proclaim, with great fanfare, that their new products will make agriculture sustainable, eliminate world hunger, cure disease, and vastly improve public health. In reality, through their business practices and political lobbying, the gene engineers have made it clear that they intend to use GE to dominate and monopolize the global market for seeds, foods, fiber, and medical products. GE is a revolutionary new technology still in its early experimental stages of development. This technology has the power to break down fundamental genetic barriers not only between species but between humans, animals, and plants. By randomly inserting together the genes of non-related species utilizing viruses, antibiotic-resistant genes, and bacteria as vectors, markers, and promoters and permanently altering their genetic codes, gene-altered organisms are created that pass these genetic changes onto their offspring through heredity. Gene engineers all over the world are now snipping, inserting, recombining, rearranging, editing, and programming genetic material. Animal genes and even human genes are randomly inserted into the chromosomes of plants, fish, and animals, creating heretofore unimaginable transgenic life forms. For the first time in history, transnational biotechnology corporations are becoming the architects and "owners" of life.

SARS and Genetic Engineering?
The complete sequence of the SARS virus is now available, confirming it is a new coronavirus unrelated to any previously known. Has genetic engineering contributed to creating it? Dr. Mae-Wan Ho and Prof. Joe Cummins call for an investigation. The World Health Organisation, which played the key role in coordinating the research, formally announced on 16 April that a new pathogen, a member of the coronavirus family never before seen in humans, is the cause of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). "The pace of SARS research has been astounding," said Dr. David Heymann, Executive Director, WHO Communicable Diseases programmes. "Because of an extraordinary collaboration among laboratories from countries around the world, we now know with certainty what causes SARS." But there is no sign that the epidemic has run its course. By 21 April, at least 3 800 have been infected in 25 countries with more than 200 dead. The worst hit are China, with 1 814 infected and 79 dead, Hong Kong, 1 380 infected and 94 dead, and Toronto, 306 infected, 14 dead. A cluster of SARS patients in Hong Kong with unusual symptoms has raised fears that the virus may be mutating, making the disease more severe. According to microbiologist Yuen Kwok-yung, at the University of Hong Kong, the 300 patients from a SARS hot spot, the Amoy Gardens apartment complex, were more seriously ill than other patients: three times as likely to suffer early diarrhoea, twice as likely to need intensive care and less likely to respond to a cocktail of anti-viral drugs and steroids. Even the medical staff infected by the Amoy Gardens patients were more seriously ill.

Rapid developments in biotechnology, genetics and genomics pose a variety of environmental, ethical, political, and social questions. And because they open up tremendous new possibilities for biological warfare, these technological developments have grave implications for peace and security. Genetic engineering can contribute to offensive BW programs in a variety of ways. With genetic manipulation, classical biowarfare agents such as anthrax or plague may be made more efficient weapons. Turn Out the Lights, The Party's Over
10 October 2002 Posted by David Rogers , 10/10/02 at 9:37:45 AM. This page will likely remain here for as long as Userland deigns to continue hosting it. I loved using Manila, but I've moved on to a different platform and a different host. Right now, I'm in the middle of cybernetic remodeling, but the basic stuff is in place. You'll find me at: Time's Shadow (The Sequel) 24 September 2002 I've been wondering what this senstivity to weather I seem to exhibit is due to. It's been raining all morning, off and on, and it's been cloudy and dark. And that's the way it feels inside too. It's weird. I managed to get the floors mopped in the kitchen and TV room last night. I also went through the TV room and removed a small amount of the clutter. You can actually see the coffee table now. I'm flying up to Norfolk later this evening for a couple of meetings tomorrow and Thursday, I fly back down Thursday afternoon. My stepdaughter Melissa is going to stay with the kids. Adding to my rather dreary outlook is the fact that I really don't like to travel on business. Norfolk is not a great place to go to, at least it holds no attraction for me. Plus, it's time away from home, where I could be making further progress on getting the house under control.

150. Memetic Science A General Introduction

MEMETIC SCIENCE : I - GENERAL INTRODUCTION Elan Moritz The Institute For Memetic Research P.O. Box 16327, Panama City, Florida 32406 Received April 23, 1990 elan@omega23.com Abstract
  • Memes and Replicators - An Informal Introduction
  • In 1987 a book called "Engines of Creation" (EOC) authored by K. Eric Drexler appeared. EOC primarily espouses Drexler's vision of nanotechnology, a technology of human-designed molecule-sized machines, which is based on the concept of replicators which are entities that generate copies of themselves. There are all kinds of replicators around us, the most rigorously (but not necessarily, fully) understood replicators are RNA and DNA molecules. Attention was drawn to a special kind of replicator that Drexler loosely termed mental-replicators. The ideas of replicators and mental-replicators were first articulated in a systematic fashion by Richard Dawkins in his landmark book "The Selfish Gene" (TSG) and later, in more technical detail, in "The Extended Phenotype" (TEP). In TSG Dawkins coined the word "meme" (pronounced 'meem' to rhyme with cream) to describe a unit of cultural transmission or imitation.

    The Journal provides a medium for the rapid publication of both full-length articles and short communications on all aspects of biotechnology. The Journal will accept papers ranging from genetic or molecular biological positions to those covering biochemical, chemical or bioprocess engineering aspects as well as computer application of new software concepts, provided that in each case the material is directly relevant to biotechnological systems. Papers presenting information of a multidisciplinary nature that would not be suitable for publication in a journal devoted to a single discipline, are particularly welcome. The following areas are covered in the Journal:
    * Nucleic Acids/Molecular Biology
