Who helps families cope with genetic disorders?
Genetic counselors are health professionals who work as members of a health care team providing information and support to families who have members with birth defects or genetic disorders, to individuals who themselves are affected with a genetic condition and to families who may be at risk for a variety of inherited problems. Genetic counselors identify families at risk, obtain the family medical history, obtain and interpret medical records and interpret information about the genetic condition. Inheritance patterns are analyzed and risks of recurrence and available options are reviewed with the family or individual. In addition to providing supportive counseling to families, genetic counselors serve as patient advocates and refer individuals and families to community or state support services.
Career Profile
Joan Scott
I first became interested in genetics while an undergraduate student at Kent State University majoring in physical anthropology. During my junior year, however, I began to seriously consider what career to pursue. I realized that I wanted a career that would combine my interest in the sciences, especially genetics, with my desire to work with people. It just so happened that at the same time I had begun to look for information on spina bifida, a birth defect that had occurred in my family. I was interested in learning the cause of spina bifida, whether it was genetic, and if I would be at risk some day to have an affected child. I remember thinking, "Where do people like me go with these kinds of questions? There must be someone trained to provide this information." Without realizing it, I defined the profession of genetic counseling. Not long after I learned that there was such a profession and that graduate training programs existed.

Introduction
Each year, millions of people, like Daryl Strawberry, are diagnosed with colon cancer. Thankfully, this type of cancer can be cured in approximately 99% of the people who are able to detect it early. Colon cancer is just one of many types of cancer that has a genetic component. Diseases that are genetic, are or can be, passed on from one generation to the next. Cancer is only one example. Many genetic diseases, unfortunately, start in childhood and are not yet curable. The well-known football player, Boomer Esiason, has a son who was born with cystic fibrosis. Cystic fibrosis along with Down's Syndrome are two of the most widely known childhood genetic diseases. Some genetic diseases however, like Huntington's Disease, have a late onset and have affected people such as Woody Guthrie, the author of 'This Land Is Your Land.'
Researchers have identified the chromosomes responsible for many of these diseases, yet no cure has been found to date. One of the newest discovery has been the correlation between breast cancer and the Human Chromosome #22. Although it's been identified, more research is necessary to correct the defective gene. With breast cancer being the #1 cancer that affects women, this discovery has led many researchers to seek funds in order to continue this battle against genetic diseases.

The Iron Disorders Institute Guide to Hemochromatosis At long last, a single source of invaluable information about diagnosis and treatment of Hemochromatosis along with many personal trials and tribulations of those who have experienced the frustrations of obtaining an appropriate diagnosis. "The Iron Disorders Institute's Guide to Hemochromatosis" is a tremendously welcome resource. I was so impressed I purchased 7 additional copies for my 5 adult children and 2 of the RNs who conduct my frequent phlebotomies. I'm also relieved that newly diagnosed "Rusties" do not have to go through the agony of research as I did back in 1979 when I was diagnosed as a result of my younger sister's autopsy results. There was scant information available in the medical journals of the period. I recall one occasion spending more than 4 hours in a medical library only to locate a single 2 year old article about Hemochromatosis, which was replete with statements that have since been proved mythical. No one will have to endure that again with the advent of IDI's "Guide".

Angelman syndrome Angelman syndrome is a genetic disorder in which a gene on chromosome 15 is missing or unexpressed. It was discovered in 1965 by Harry Angelman. Children with Angelman syndrome are generally late to develop and speak very little but have good linguistic comprehension. They have a protruding lower jaw or tongue. They laugh often, hold their arms as if they were a marionette, and flap them around, which gave the syndrome its initial name, "happy puppet syndrome".
